Gender Violence Prevention and Education Services presents the 2025 Crocheting for a Cause Launch! Join us on Wednesday, Feb. 5 from 12-3p in 203 Hayes Hall (CWGE Conference Room).Crocheting for a Cause is a yearly campaign to bring awareness to sexual violence and show support of survivors. GVPES supplies crocheting/knitting supplies and encourages participants to work at their leisure throughout February and March. All completed pieces are gathered in early April and added to the existing collection to form our Sexual Assault Awareness Month Yarn Storm.The Launch is a great time to pick up your supplies, meet other crafters, and learn more about our SAAM Yarn Storm. Don’t know how to crochet/knit but still want to participate? No problem! Staff will be on hand to teach the basics.If you are unable to attend, stop by 278 Hayes Hall Monday-Friday, 9a-5p to pick up supplies. Can’t make it over to Hayes? The Center for Women and Gender Equity is partnering with Wood County Hospital for their annual donation drive! Donated items will benefit the Wood County Hospital SANE Department and Community Outreach programs. International Book Award-winning poet to visit Bowling Green State University!Thursday, February 6, 2025(Bowling Green, Ohio) – Colombian American poet Carlos Andrés Gómez, star of HBO’s Def Poetry Jam and Spike Lee’s #1 box office movie Inside Man with Denzel Washington, will perform his original work on Thursday, February 6, 2025 at 6 p.m. in room 314 of the Bowen-Thompson Student Union. The event is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception and book signing with Gómez.Carlos Andrés Gómez is the author of Hijito, for which he was awarded the Foreword INDIES Gold Medal and the International Book Award for Poetry in 2020, and the coming-of-age memoir Man Up: Reimagining Modern Manhood, released by Penguin Random House in 2012.His most recent book, Fractures, was selected by Pulitzer Prize-winning former U.S. Poet Laureate Natasha Trethewey as the winner of the Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry.Hailing from New York City, Gómez has performed at more than 700 colleges and universities in 46 U.S. states and headlined shows in 26 countries across five continents. He has been featured on NPR, TEDx, Upworthy, Central Park SummerStage, and partnered with John Legend for Senior Orientation, a program to counteract bullying and champion inclusive masculinity among high school students.A former social worker and public school teacher, Carlos first made a name for himself by winning at the Apollo Theater’s celebrated Amateur Night and later as a member of the renowned Nuyorican Poets Café’s slam team. In 2008, he collaborated with Tony Award-winning tap dance legend Savion Glover on Broadway. Gómez is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania and the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College.
