- Oct 244:00 PMCRONOS and the Golden Goose: Chapters in the History of Post-War Poetry and PublishingJoin us for a special presentation by poet and scholar David Adams, as he explores CRONOS and The Golden Goose: Chapters in the History of Post-War Poetry and Publishing. CRONOS, first published in 1947 by Ohio State University students Richard Wirtz Emerson, Gene D. Symonds, Ward Taylor, and Frederick Eckman, along with faculty member Claude Strauss, all of whom had recently returned from World War II, became a significant force in small press publishing. It later evolved into The Golden Goose, showcasing a diverse array of literary voices, such as William Carlos Williams, Denise Levertov, and Ezra Pound.David Adams, a BGSU Master of Fine Arts graduate and mentee of Frederick Eckman, will discuss the history and impact of these publications on post-war poetry, as well as his personal ties to Eckman, a founding editor of CRONOS and The Golden Goose. Eckman, who joined BGSU’s English Department in 1961 and co-founded its Creative Writing program in 1968, was instrumental in shaping literary culture both locally and nationally. This presentation offers an insightful look into the rich history of post-war poetry.More About Frederick Eckman Eckman wrote both poetry and prose, publishing in notable literary magazines and establishing a solid reputation as a poet and critic and joined the English Department at BGSU in 1961. He co-founded the Creative Writing program at BGSU in 1968 with Philip O’Connor, teaching other young poets while continuing his own work. He retired from academic life in 1980. Frederick and his wife, Martha Eckman, established the Thomas F. Eckman Memorial Collection in Jerome Library in honor of their son, who was killed by a sniper on the UT-Austin campus in 1966. Their gift comprises the core Special Collections poetry collection and includes a fund for its continued growth.
