Falcons Clinch Spot In MAC Tournament Despite Dropping Doubleheader

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team fell in a doubleheader at Scott Park on Saturday (May 3) against the Toledo Rockets. Toledo took the first game in an 8-3 final and the second with an 8-1 score. The Falcons had previously won the first game of the series on Friday (May 2) at Fifth Third Field. BGSU and UT will conclude their four-game series later this season with a midweek, non-conference game on May 13. Despite the pair of losses for Bowling Green, the Falcons were able to clinch their spot in the MAC Tournament this season with results from around the conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1

  • To start the second inning, Zack Horky knocked a double to right, continuing his hot stretch. Brayden Curlis followed with a single through the right side, scoring Horky for a 1-0 lead.
  • Toledo answered with an unearned run in the bottom of the second to knot up the score at 1-1. Another unearned run for the Rockets crossed in the third for a 2-1 UT advantage.
  • In the fifth inning, Garrett Sloan drew a lead off walk. A sacrifice bunt by Caden Bates moved Sloan to second before taking third on a ground out. With two outs in the inning, Alex Laird pulled a single through the left side of the infield, scoring Sloan to tie up at 2-2.
  • The Rockets reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth, moving in front 4-2 with a pair of runs. They added two unearned runs in the sixth to push their lead to 6-2. 
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Toledo registered two runs to make it an 8-2 score.
  • Moving to the eighth, Gavin Ganun knocked a single to right, taking second on a wild pitch. Horky drew a walk before both runners advanced on another wild pitch. Curlis was able to put a ball in play, scoring Ganun to narrow the gap to 8-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2

  • Toledo scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second, taking a 1-0 lead. The Rockets added three more in the third for a 4-0 advantage. 
  • Gavin Ganun was hit by a pitch to start the fourth followed by a Zack Horky single. A passed ball advanced both runners before a sacrifice fly from Brayden Curlis scored Ganun for a 4-1 tally. 
  • The Rockets extended their lead in the fifth inning, plating two to push the score to 6-1. In the bottom of the eighth, Toledo added two runs for an 8-1 score.

  • With results from around the conference, Bowling Green officially clinched their spot in the 2025 MAC Tournament. The appearance will give BGSU back-to-back MAC Tournament appearances for the first time since 2014-15. 
  • Garrett Wright tallied a hit in each game for the Falcons, pushing his hitting streak to 10 games and his on-base to 34, both leading the team. 
  • Zack Horky knocked a base hit in each game for the Falcons, extending his hitting streak to nine games. He did, however, see his RBI streak come to a close at eight games.
  • Gavin Ganun scored in each game for the Falcons, giving him a run scored in five of the last six games. 
  • Brayden Curlis logged a hit and an RBI in each of the two games of the doubleheader. He's now up to 15 RBI on the season. 
  • Carter Mottice stole a base in the second game of the day, marking his first stolen base of his collegiate career.  

UP NEXT
The Falcons will transition back to non-conference play, starting with a home midweek contest, hosting Butler on Tuesday (May 6) at Steller Field, scheduled for a 3 p.m. start. From there, BGSU will have their non-conference weekend, playing two at Notre Dame before welcoming the Fighting Irish to Bowling Green on Sunday (May 11).
