Falcons Win In Game Two Walk-Off To Sweep Doubleheader Over EMU

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team claimed a pair of wins on Saturday (April 26) sweeping a doubleheader over Eastern Michigan. The day started by resuming Friday's (April 25) game in the fourth inning, leading to an 11-4 BGSU victory. The Falcons followed it up in game two with a two-out ninth inning rally to walk-it-off over EMU in a 10-9 final, setting up the potential for a sweep on Sunday (April 27). The Falcons are now 27-14 on the season while being 15-8 within the MAC.

The day started by resuming Friday's (April 25) game in the fourth inning, leading to an 11-4 BGSU victory. The Falcons followed it up in game two with a two-out ninth inning rally to walk-it-off over EMU in a 10-9 final, setting up the potential for a sweep on Sunday (April 27). The Falcons are now 27-14 on the season while being 15-8 within the MAC. 

In the first game, the day resumed with a 3-2 BGSU lead through three innings, picking up where Friday (April 25) left off. Eastern Michigan tied the game in the fourth, but the Falcons immediately reclaimed the lead in the bottom half with a 5-3 score. The lead for Bowling Green grew to 9-3 before the next Eagle run. The Falcons capped off the game with two more runs for the 11-4 win in the first game of the series.

The second game started similarly to the first with two first inning runs for Eastern Michigan, but four runs for the Orange and Brown in the bottom half pushed the Falcons in front. EMU battled back, taking a 5-4 lead while holding Bowling Green scoreless from the second inning through the sixth. The Eagles extended their lead with a fifth inning run, but a tally in the seventh for the Falcons pulled BGSU within one. Three runs for both teams sent the game to the ninth with a 9-8 EMU lead. With two-outs in the bottom of the ninth, Alex Laird and Gunner Antillon tallied back-to-back RBI singles through the right side to tie and then win the game for Bowling Green. 

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1

  • The game started on Friday with Eastern Michigan recording two runs in the top of the first for a 2-0 lead in the game.
  • The Falcons responded in the bottom half. Gunner Antillon and Gavin Ganun both walked, separated by a Garrett Wright single to load the bases. TJ Takats was able to lift a sacrifice fly out to left, scoring Antillon for a 2-1 score.
  • In the second inning the Falcons again loaded the bases. Brayden Curlis started the inning with a walk before bunt singles for both Carter Mottice and Alex Laird. With the bases loaded, Wright pushed a single up the middle to score both Curlis and Mottice for a 3-2 BGSU lead.
  • After the third inning, the game was postponed to Saturday due to weather. Play resumed in the top of the fourth on Saturday at noon. In the top of the fourth, Eastern Michigan tallied one run to tie the game up at 3-3.
  • The Falcons answered in the bottom half. Walks to Antillon, Wright and Takats loaded the bases before an EMU pitching change. Zack Horky welcomed the new hurler with a single through the left side of the infield, scoring both Antillon and Wright for a 5-3 advantage.
  • With two outs in the sixth, Brayden Curlis registered an infield single, taking second on a throwing error. Walks to both Mottice and Laird loaded the bases. A wild pitch scored Curlis before an Antillon single up the middle brought home both Mottice and Laird. With the score at 8-3 Falcons, Eastern Michigan opted for a pitching change.
  • After the change, the Falcons again loaded the bases with walks to both Wright and Ganun before another Eagle call to the bullpen. With the new pitcher, Takats drew a walk to push home Antillon for BGSU with a 9-3 score.
  • Eastern Michigan opened the seventh inning with a solo home run, cutting the deficit to 9-4.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Cooper McKenzie and Curlis started the inning with back-to-back singles with a wild pitch moving both runners up. A sacrifice fly to right field from Mottice brought home McKenzie.
  • Walks to Laird and Antillon again loaded the bases with EMU making another call to the bullpen. A sacrifice fly to right by Wright scored Curlis for an 11-4 lead.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2

  • Eastern Michigan tallied two runs in the top of the first to take a 2-0 lead in the game.
  • Gunner Antillon started the BGSU half with a single up the middle. Garrett Wright was hit by a pitch before Gavin Ganun singled through the right side to load the bases. TJ Takats was plunked by a pitch, forcing home Antillon for the first BGSU run of the game.
  • Zack Horky kept it going with a bases loaded walk to score Wright for a 2-2 tie. A fielder's choice off the bat of Caden Parker brought home Ganun and a wild pitch resulted in Takats scoring, giving BGSU a 4-2 lead after one played.
  • Eastern Michigan continued the back-and-forth with an unearned run in the second before two more in the third for a 5-4 advantage. 
  • EMU added an insurance run in the fifth inning, extending their lead to 6-4. 
  • In the bottom of the seventh, Takats and Horky logged back-to-back singles for the Falcons. Parker put a ball in play, but a throwing error on the fielder's choice allowed Takats to score for a 6-5 score through seven innings.
  • Eastern Michigan put insurance back on the board in the eighth with three runs to push their advantage to 9-5.
  • The Falcons again battled back. Carter Mottice was hit by a pitch before walks to Alex Laird and Antillon loaded the bases. Wright delivered a triple to right center, clearing the bases with three runs scoring for a 9-8 score.
  • In the ninth, Parker singled and Curlis was hit by a pitch to put two on for the Falcons. After an EMU pitching change, Mottice flew out, advancing Parker to third to put runners at the corners. Laird came through with a two-out single through the right side of the infield, scoring Parker for a 9-9 tie.
  • Antillon followed with a single through the right side of his own, scoring Curlis from second to complete the two-out rally with a walk-off 10-9 win.

  • The walk-off win for the Falcons is the first since March 21 of this year when Brady Birchmeier singled through the right side to score Brayden Curlis in an 11-10 win over Kent State. 
  • Garrett Wright was hit by a pitch in each game, giving him 22 HBPs this season. The total sets the program record for single-season hit-by-pitches, resulting in Wright breaking the record each of his first two seasons at Bowling Green. 
  • Wright reached base in both games as well, increasing his on-base streak to 29 games, the longest streak by a Falcon this season. Wright has also scored in eight straight games with a total of 13 runs scored over the span in addition to a five-game hitting streak and a five-game RBI streak. 
  • Wright capped off his stat line with his fourth triple of the season. He's now one away from breaking into the program's top five for single-season triples and two away from tying the record. 
  • Gunner Antillon continued to showcase a hot bat for the Falcons, extending his hitting streak to seven games. Over the seven-game stretch, Antillon has 18 hits, 15 RBI and 11 runs scored, including an RBI and a run in six of the last seven games. Antillon also drew four walks in the first game of the day, the most by a Falcon in a game this season.
  • Owen Poole recorded the win for the Falcons in the first game, becoming the first BGSU pitcher this season to reach four wins on the year. Poole also set career-highs in innings pitched (4.0) and strikeouts (5) in the outing. 
  • Connar Penrod quickly joined Poole in the four-win category for the Falcons, registering the win in the second game of the day. Penrod now has 11 career wins to go along with his 11 career saves. 
  • Zack Horky tallied at least one hit in each game, giving him a four-game hitting streak as well as a four-game RBI streak. Over his last four games, Horky has 10 hits, six RBI, five runs scored and two doubles. 
  • Alex Laird continued to swing a strong bat, pushing his hitting streak to five games. Laird has also scored in five of the last six games for the Falcons as well while posting a nine-game on-base streak. 
  • Carter Mottice improved upon his impressive stretch. Since debuting on April 9, Mottice has reached base in nine of his 11 games played while totaling 12 hits, 11 runs scored, six RBI and four doubles. 
  • Returning to the lineup in the second game, Caden Parker tallied a hit for the Falcons to extend his on-base streak to 25 games, the second longest active streak on the team.
  • In the first game of the day, Brayden Curlis scored a career-high three times for the Falcons. Curlis now has four multi-run games with three of those four coming within the last five contests. 
  • TJ Takats posted a multi-hit game in the second game of the day, now with 10 multi-hit games on the season while having a hit in eight of the last nine games.
