Broncos Escape the Stroh With 63-60 Win
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Western Michigan University made three free throws with 17.3 seconds to go, posting a 63-60 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team on Wednesday night (Jan. 22) at the Stroh Center.
Erika Porter led the Falcons (9-9, 3-4 Mid-American Conference) with 17 points, going 8-of-10 from the field, while Amy Velasco had 15 points on the night.
Marina Asensio and Hannah Spitzley scored 19 and 18 points, respectively, for the Broncos (8-9, 5-2 MAC).
The game featured seven ties and no fewer than 19 lead changes.
BGSU had led by eight points – the largest margin of the night for either team – after three quarters, but the Broncos got back within three on several occasions early in the fourth period. And, Spitzley's corner three made it a one-point game with just under three minutes to go. Porter scored inside, but another Spitzley triple tied the contest, 58-58, with 1:38 remaining.
Porter again made a layup, but Alli Carlson threw in an unconventional, one-handed shot to tie the score with 43.7 seconds left. BGSU used most of the shot clock on the next possession, and Velasco drove and saw her contested layup bounce off the rim. The Falcons were called for a personal foul in the battle for the rebound, and BG also was whistled for an intentional foul on the play, resulting in four free throws for the Broncos with 17.3 seconds to go.
Spitzley made her two charity tosses, and Asensio made her first try, but missed the second. Western maintained possession of the ball after the intentional foul, and BG quickly fouled Spitzley when the ball was inbounded.
Spitzley missed both of her shots at the stripe, and Paige Kohler grabbed the rebound. At the other end of the court, the Falcons got a pair of looks from the arc. A Velasco shot would not drop, but Jasmine Fearne won a battle for the rebound, getting the ball to Velasco who in turn found Lexi Fleming. Fleming's shot also was off the mark, however, and the Broncos got the rebound.
Asensio was fouled with just 0.3 seconds remaining, and missed both free-throw tries, but there was not enough time remaining for the Falcons to get a shot off.
FIRST QUARTER
• Erika Porter scored inside on the first possession of the game, and Amy Velasco knocked down a three-point try with just over 90 seconds gone. But, Velasco's trey came between back-to-back triples by WMU's Marina Asensio, and Alli Carlson's layup gave the visitors an 8-5 lead. Neither team scored for over two minutes after that, but after the teams exchanged free throws, Velasco lobbed the ball inside to Kendal Moxey for a layup that got BG within a ponit.
• But, Asensio made another three-pointer, and after Paige Kohler's driving layup, a long two-pointer by Asensio put the visitors ahead by a 14-10 count.
• Velasco took a Johnea Donahue handoff and drained a three-point try, and Kohler drove and scored to give the Falcons a 15-14 lead with 1:33 left in the period. The Broncos got a bucket, but Kohler's inbounds pass found Moxey for a layup, and the Falcons got a stop to end the quarter with a 17-16 advantage.
• Asensio had 11 of her team's 16 first-period points, going 3-for-3 from the arc.
SECOND QUARTER
• Evyn Carrier's layup began the second-quarter scoring, but Taya Ellis handed the ball to Donahue, who was cutting down the lane for a finger-roll layup, and a Velasco hoop gave the Orange and Brown a 21-18 lead.
• Asensio made it 4-for-4 from the arc with a three-pointer seemingly out of nowhere, and Lauren Audino's bucket put the visitors back in front. But, after another scoreless stretch for both teams, Lexi Fleming stole a pass and raced downcourt for a layup to tie the game. Then, after a Western miss, Kohler's long pass found Keiryn McGuff ahead of the pack for a layup and a 25-23 BGSU lead.
• Audino scored with two minutes left in the half, but the Falcons retook the lead when Jasmine Fearne knocked down a three-point try. The Broncos got a Carlson layup just before the horn sounded, tying the game, 28-28, at the half.
THIRD QUARTER
• The back-and-forth play continued as the second half got underway. Asensio hit a foul-line jumper, and Hannah Spitzley's layup gave her team a four-point lead, but Velasco tracked down a long offensive rebound before knocking down a three-pointer, and a Fleming steal gave the ball back to the Falcons before the Cincinnati native hit a triple try from in front of her team's bench. BG led, 34-32.
• The visitors answered with a Maggie Stutelberg trey, but Porter scored inside. Asensio hit a step-back jumper, but Velasco lobbed the ball into the paint for another Porter layup and a 38-37 BG lead midway through the period.
• Another Velasco-to-Porter connection put BG up by three, but Spitzley saw a three-point try go off glass and through the hoop to tie the contest. Then, however, the Falcons ended the period on an 8-0 run.
• Donahue made a layup, and after a Fearne free throw, Donahue dribbled inside and found Porter for a layup with 1:05 to go. Then, Fearne's pass led to an and-one layup by Porter with just 1.9 seconds remaining in the period, and Porter's free throw gave BG a 48-40 lead.
• Porter had 11 points in the quarter, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the field.
FOURTH QUARTER
• The Broncos scored the first five points of the quarter, with a three-point play from Spitzley and a pair of Carlson free throws. Donahue salvaged a BG possession with a driving layup, however, and a Kohler steal led to a transition pull-up jumper by Velasco. And, when Velasco drove across the paint and scored on an impressive layup, the Falcons had a 54-47 lead with just under five minutes to go.
• Carlson's rainbow three cut the lead to four, but Fearne saved the ball after a near turnover, finding Kohler slicing to the basket for a reverse layup and a 56-50 lead with 3:49 left.
• Carrier's layup was followed by a Spitzley triple, cutting the BGSU lead to 56-55 with 2:51 on the clock and setting the stage for the frenetic finish.
• The Broncos went 7-of-9 from the field in the fourth quarter. Spitzley scored 13 points in the final period, going 4-for-4 from the floor.
