Falcons Continue to Soar as NCAA Releases Latest GSR Data
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The NCAA released the Graduation Success Rate (GSR) for each Division I athletic program today, and Bowling Green State University (BGSU) continues to excel nationally and within the Mid-American Conference. BGSU posted a GSR of 91 percent, with nine of the department's 18 teams achieving a perfect score of 100 percent and 14 sports exceeding 90 percent. The 91 percent score ranks as the second-best in program history, trailing only the 92 percent mark previously achieved.
"Our 91 percent Graduation Success Rate reflects not only our commitment but also the commitment of our student-athletes to their academic success," said BGSU Director of Athletics Derek van der Merwe. "We're incredibly proud of this achievement. It is a testament to the dedication of our student-athletes, coaches, and Student-Athlete Services (SAS) staff, who provide the academic support and resources that make this possible."
Men's cross country, hockey, women's basketball, women's golf, gymnastics, women's soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, and volleyball all posted perfect scores of 100 percent. Additionally, every women's program at BGSU achieved a GSR above 90 percent.
"Our 91 percent Graduation Success Rate serves as a clear testament to the academic caliber of students our coaches are recruiting to BGSU, the outstanding work of the Student-Athlete Services team, and the unrivaled dedication of our students in the pursuit of academic excellence," said Associate AD for Student-Athlete Services Jaysen Spencer. Our academic success paired with championship-level performance in competition is what makes Bowling Green State University a special place. When student-athletes come to BGSU, they know they will have the opportunity to win championships and earn a degree."
All nine programs with perfect scores were tied for the highest in their respective leagues, including the Mid-American Conference and the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Additionally, BGSU baseball shared the top spot with a GSR of 96 percent.
These statistics highlight the commitment of BGSU's student-athletes to excel both on the field and in the classroom. The synergy between these areas creates a foundation for success throughout their collegiate experience.
The Graduation Success Rate was developed by the NCAA as part of its academic reform initiative to more accurately measure the success of Division I student-athletes. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the GSR accounts for transfer students, midyear enrollees, and other academic paths. It is calculated for every sport.
The GSR data released today is based on the four entering freshman classes in Division I from 2014 through 2017 and measures graduation within a six-year window.
