Building a culture: Football’s new faces in the backfield
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - BGSU football has seen many new fresh faces this season under new Mike and Jan Wilcox Head Football Coach Eddie George, especially on the offensive side of the ball. BG have seen many impactful players depart creating new opportunities for younger names, especially in the running-back room.
Some of the newest names that have made appearances in the backfield consist of redshirt freshman Cameron Pettaway, freshman Mar'Kel Porter and junior Chris McMillian. Not only have the new backs seen numerous snaps on the field, so far combining for nearly 300 rushing yards in the young season, they have simultaneously created a new culture with each other inside the locker room.
"The running back room is like a family to me," Pettaway said. "It's always good to have those connections close by; it makes it easier to come to practice every day and work with them."
With become a family-like environment for the newest members, it also has created an uplifting and encouraging atmosphere for all of the running backs to push and motivate each other through all four quarters. Porter expressed how the weight-room and locker-room vibes is one of the key pieces to making the motivation to push one another to be at an all-time high.
"We all push each other to get better every single day," Porter said. "It's the same consistency every single day; We always help each other, and give each other like little pointers throughout the year."
Pettaway not only gave the same praise for the work ethic as Porter, but also explaining the fulfillment and excitement seeing one of their own work hard.
"Every day, we're working hard," Pettaway said. "It means a lot because because when you see your brother supporting you and wanting to see you do good; it just means a lot from a brother standpoint."
Outside of the team aspect, one factor that players will always carry with them is the 'why?' with them. The factor that motivates not just the backfield, but to every player that steps foot on the field wanting to create success.
Porter stressed the importance of the motive not just within themselves, but to the individuals they'll stand next to at every practice, workout, and game.
"We've really connected more by knowing each other's 'why's?' why the person next to you is going so hard every day," Porter said. "Knowing like what your brother is doing is doing it for will really make you push even harder."
For a player like McMillian, the 'why' goes beyond the game of football.
"My why is I just lost my brother two weeks ago," McMillian said. "So, I'm the only boy, and there was my mama, always boy, so I feel like that's my life. My family."
Energy was also voice by three of the ball carriers. Which is in large part to the new coaching tenure at BG and how George is able to condition the team week in, and week out.
"It's just that it's coach George," McMillian said. "Like, all the players, and the coaches bring the same energy, and you have no choice but to be great with coach George; so just in fundamentals, it's like a every game, every rep type of thing, so it's amazing to be coached by them."
As the season continues to press on, and the back field continues to grow, the Falcons will look to not only build a team that is capable of winning games, but one that builds a humble and hard-working environment. The back's even expressed looking forward to the next obstacles that will come their way as the schedule moves along.
"I'm looking forward to every game, every game counts, and like that every day is a game day," Porter said. "Each game can go lower or higher."
Pettaway responded with the same attitude of every game being important, but it wasn't without having one special game circled on the calendar.
"All of them," Pettway said. "But definitely looking forward to Toledo."
