John Henderson Named a Ray Guy Award Semifinalist
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green State University punter John Henderson has been named a semifinalist for the Ray Guy Award, as announced by the Augusta Sports Council. The award is given annually to the nation's most outstanding punter. Henderson is one of 10 semifinalist and chosen from a field of 89 candidates and the only semifinalist from the Mid-American Conference.
Henderson (Acton, Calif., Jr.) is averaging 41.9 yards per punt. He has booted 16 punts inside the 20-yard line and another five have gone 50+ yards. Henderson's punts along with BGSU's punt coverage has the Falcons yielding only 22 return yards through 10 games. That ranks No. 11 in the nation. Henderson's average 52.2 yards per punt in a win at Central Michigan. That average ranks tied for No. 11 all-time on BGSU's single-game ledger.
The candidates were evaluated by the Ray Guy Award committee on their overall statistics and contribution to the team. Emphasis was placed on net punting average, percentage of punts downed or kicked out-of-bounds inside the opponents 20-yard line, and percentage of punts not returned. The winner must display team leadership, self-discipline and have a positive impact on the team's success.
A national voting body of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) sports information directors, national media and previous Ray Guy Award winners will decide the three award finalists who will be announced on Tuesday, November 26. The voting body will then vote again to determine the winner of the Ray Guy Award. The winner will be announced live on Thurs., Dec. 12 during The Home Depot College Football Awards on ESPN.
