Falcons, Rockets Set For National TV Rematch Friday Night In Toledo
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team will head north on I-75 to take on the rival Toledo Rockets Friday night (Feb. 21) on national TV. For the second time this season, the matchup between BGSU and Toledo will be televised on CBS Sports Network. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip on CBSSN with Alex Del Barrio and Noah Buono on the call. Additionally, Todd Walker and Erik Marschall will provide the BGSU radio feed on WFRO Eagle 99.
Opening Tip
The Falcons and Rockets will be meeting for the 184th time in program history with Toledo holding the all-time advantage with a record of 99-84. When playing at Toledo, the Rockets have the edge with a 51-32 record. The last BGSU win at Savage Arena was on Feb. 13, 2021 with an 88-81 final. This will mark Bowling Green's fourth nationally televised game this season and third on CBS Sports Network. The other was on Big Ten Network against Michigan State. This is the third straight and the fourth time in the last four seasons the Battle of I-75 has been nationally televised, being on CBSSN three times and ESPNU once.
A Bowling Green Win Would…
- Split the season series with Toledo in the Battle of I-75.
- Mark the first win for Bowling Green inside Savage Arena since an 88-81 win over the Rockets on Feb. 13, 2021.
- Give the Orange and Brown back-to-back road wins for the first time this season.
- Push the Falcons back above .500 during the Coach Simon Era at BGSU with a 31-30 record.
- Grant BGSU wins in four of their last six games.
Humphrey Nearing 1,000
This season, Bowling Green has already had two players eclipse 1,000 career points with Trey Thomas and Derrick Butler. Entering the season, Marcus Johnson and Javontae Campbell had already reached the mark. Now, DaJion Humphrey is next on the list. After missing time due to an injury, Humphrey has returned to the lineup for the Falcons. Against both NIU and Ohio, Humphrey tallied a season-high 11 points and now has 996 for his collegiate career, leaving him four shy of reaching the career milestone.
Scouting The Rockets
Since the last Battle of I-75 matchup, the Rockets have tallied a 5-2 record, but are 1-2 in their last three. UT came up short in back-to-back games, falling to Miami (OH) 92-80 and Eastern Michigan 80-73, but got back in the win column with a 67-66 win over Ball State on Tuesday (Feb. 18). Over the seven games since the last Battle of I-75, Toledo has recorded just one win with a margin of victory greater than four, being an 87-74 final over Buffalo. Their wins over Ohio, NIU, James Madison and Ball State were by four or less.
BGSU vs. Toledo, All-Time
The Falcons and Rockets will be meeting for the 184th time in program history with the all-time series leaning to Toledo, 99-84. The last win for Bowling Green at Savage Arena came on Feb. 13, 2021 with an 88-81 final. Since then, Toledo has gone 6-1 in the series with BGSU's win coming in the second meeting last year. In the first meeting this season, the Falcons were led by Marcus Johnson's 28 points while Jamai Felt added a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three blocks.
Johnson At The Line
Marcus Johnson is currently in the midst of making 28 straight free throws. The last miss at the line for Johnson came against Eastern Michigan on Jan. 18. Going back a game further, Johnson has made 35 of his last 36 free throw attempts dating back to Jan. 14. The stretch has pushed Johnson's free throw percentage back above 90-percent, sitting at 90.8, which ranks first in the MAC among qualified players and 12th in the nation. Last year, Johnson shot 90.8-percent at the line on 120 attempts for Wheeling.
Campbell Moves Up Program List
Javontae Campbell tallied another pair of steals in the Falcons' last game, reaching 76 for the season. Campbell is now second on the program's all-time list for single-season steals. The next step will be the program record, which is held by DeMar Moore with 82 during the 1996-97 season. As for the MAC steals record, it's held by Ball State's Bonzi Wells with 103 during the 1997-98 campaign. Campbell's 2.92 steals per game are third in the nation. He is also three steals away from setting a new career-high after having 78 steals last season for Northern Oklahoma.
Exacte Finding Bench Rhythm
WIilguens Jr. Exacte has started finding his role off the bench for the Falcons of late, specifically in the rebounding category. Over the last three games, Exacte is averaging 7.3 rebounds per game off the bench to go along with 6.0 points per game, including 11 against Kent State. During MAC play, Exacte is averaging 5.1 rebounds per game, third on the team, and 5.7 points per game, but up from his season average of 3.7 rebounds and 4.3 points.
Trio Of Falcons Pulling Up From Deep
So far this season, the Falcons have three players that have attempted 135 or more three-pointers. Marcus Johnson tops the list with 169 attempts followed by Trey Thomas' 145 and Derrick Butler's 136. Bowling Green is the only team in the Mid-American Conference with three players north of the 135-mark for three-pointers attempted. In fact, only three teams in the MAC have three players north of the 100-mark, being Akron and Buffalo. Johnson, Thomas and Butler are three of 10 players in the MAC with 135 or more three attempts. No other team in the conference has more than one player on the list.
