Falcons Fly To Buffalo For Saturday Squabble With Bulls
BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team will head on the road for the first time in in two weeks, flying to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on the Buffalo Bulls. Bowling Green and Buffalo are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start inside Alumni Arena on Saturday (Feb. 15), marking the 50th meeting all-time between the two teams. The game between the Falcons and Bulls will be available to stream on ESPN+ with Todd Walker having the radio call on WFRO Eagle 99 for the Falcons.
Opening Tip
The Falcons and Bulls will be meeting for the 50th time in program history with Buffalo holding a slim margin in the series at 25-24 all-time. In the game between BGSU and UB earlier this season, the Falcons captured a 79-61 victory inside the Stroh Center, marking back-to-back wins for Bowling Green in the series. Entering the game, Bowling Green and Buffalo are tied in the MAC standings, each with a 3-8 record in conference play. The outcome of the game will decide the head-to-head tiebreaker. Bowling Green and Buffalo are two of the three teams in the MAC to have three players attempt 100+ three-pointers so far this season.
A Bowling Green Win Would…
- Tie the all-time series between BGSU and UB at 25-25 through 50 meetings.
- Mark the first win in Buffalo for the Orange and Brown since Jan. 15, 2021 when the Falcons recorded a 76-69 victory.
- Grant Bowling Green three straight wins in the all-time series, the longest winning streak for BGSU over Buffalo since winning the first nine meetings ever, ranging from 1998-2002.
- Secure the season tiebreaker over Buffalo for the Falcons in the MAC standings..
Trio of Falcons Pulling Up From Deep
So far this season, the Falcons have three players that have attempted 130 or more three-pointers. Marcus Johnson tops the list with 152 attempts followed by Trey Thomas' 135 and Derrick Butler's 131. Bowling Green is the only team in the Mid-American Conference with three players north of the 130-mark for three-pointers attempted. In fact, only three teams in the MAC have three players north of the 100-mark, being Akron and Buffalo. Johnson, Thomas and Butler are three of 10 players in the MAC with 130 or more three-pointers. No other team in the conference has more than one player on the list.
Scouting The Bulls
Since the last meeting between Bowling Green and Buffalo, the Bulls have posted a record of 3-5, including a 3-4 MAC record with the other loss being to Georgia State in the MAC-Sun Belt Challenge. Immediately after the BGSU game, Buffalo topped Western Michigan, 85-76, on Jan. 18. They went on to beat Central Michigan, 75-69, on Jan. 28 and are now coming off a Tuesday win over Northern Illinois, 73-67. The wins have brought their MAC record to 3-8 on the season, tying the Falcons in the conference standings.
BGSU vs. Buffalo, All-Time
The Falcons and Bulls will be meeting for the 50th time in program history and the second time this season. Buffalo holds a slim margin in the series with a record of 25-24 over BGSU, but Bowling Green has claimed the last two meetings. In the first meeting between the two this season, the Falcons were led by Trey Thomas' 22 points along with 21 from Marcus Johnson, missing a double-double by one rebound. As a team, the Falcons went 27-of-36 at the line in that game as well.
Butler Off The Bench
Over the last three games, Derrick Butler has been a force off the bench for the Falcons. After missing the Central Michigan game, Butler returned to the court in a bench role against NIU, Coastal Carolina and Ohio. In those three games, Butler is averaging 18.0 points per game, including a 21-point game against Coastal to go along with 15 points against NIU and 18 points against Ohio. For the year, Butler is averaging 12.2 points when coming off the bench, including a pair of 20-point games, scoring 21 against Bellarmine as well.
Campbell Moves Up Program List
Javontae Campbell tallied another pair of steals in the Falcons' last game, reaching 72 for the season. Campbell is now tied for fourth on the program's all-time list for single-season steals. The next step will be second all-time, which is currently a tie between Antonio Daniels (1996-97) and Scott Thomas (2011-12) with 73. The current BGSU single-season steals record is set at 82 by DeMar Moore in 1996-97. As for the MAC steals record, it's held by Ball State's Bonzi Wells with 103 during the 1997-98 campaign. Campbell's 3.00 steals per game are third in the nation.
Humphrey Nearing 1,000 Points
This season, Bowling Green has already had two players eclipse 1,000 career points with Trey Thomas and Derrick Butler. Entering the season, Marcus Johnson and Javontae Campbell had already reached the mark. Now, DaJion Humphrey is next on the list. After missing time due to an injury, Humphrey has returned to the lineup for the Falcons. Against both NIU and Ohio, Humphrey tallied a season-high 11 points and now has 980 for his collegiate career, leaving him 20 shy of reaching the career milestone.
Felt On The Block
Jamai Felt has worked his way up to the leaders in the MAC on the block. Felt has recorded 36 blocks this year, tied for the most by anyone in the conference with Ohio's AJ Clayton. Additionally, Felt is averaging 1.5 blocks per game, third behind Clayton (1.7) and NIU's Ethan Butler (1.6) with 28 blocks in 18 games. As for conference play, Felt has 24 blocks in 11 games, averaging a MAC-best 2.2 per contest with Kent State's Cli'ron Hornbeak second with 23 and 2.1 per game.

The Cup will take place later this month in Nicaragua, scheduled for August 22-31. The Bahamas will be part of Group A, joined by the United States, Brazil and Uruguay. The first game for the Bahamas will be against the United States on August 23. Following completion of the tournament, Nairn is set to return to Bowling Green and resume his duties as associate head coach.

The awards represent achievement in the classroom by men's college basketball teams and individual players. This year, Bowling Green received the Team Academic Excellence Award with six players being named to the Honors Court. For BGSU, the five players include Javontae Campbell, Wilguens Jr. Exacte, DaJion Humphrey, Mohamed Maxamud, Greg Spurgin and Preston Squire.
