Back To MACtion: Falcons Resume Conference Play In Tuesday Tussle With Ohio

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's basketball team will wrap up their three-game homestand on Tuesday (Feb. 11) resuming MAC play with a contest against the Ohio Bobcats. The Falcons and Bobcats are scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip inside the Stroh Center and will be a White Out with fans encouraged to wear white in support of the the Falcons. The game is set to be broadcasted on ESPN+. Additionally, Todd Walker will have the radio call on WFRO Eagle 99.

Opening Tip
The Falcons and Bobcats will be meeting for the 156th time in program history with Bowling Green leading the all-time series with a record of 85-70. When playing the series in Bowling Green, the Falcons hold the edge with a record of 50-23. BGSU has won six straight games when hosting OU. The game will mark the third consecutive home game for the Falcons, winning the first two with an 84-77 score over Northern Illinois and a 67-53 win against Coastal Carolina. BGSU-OU will feature the top two players in the conference for blocks this season. BGSU's Jamai Felt has a MAC-leading 36 while OU's AJ Clayton has 35. 

A Bowling Green Win Would… 

  • Give the Falcons three consecutive wins for the first time this season following wins over Northern Illinois and Coastal Carolina.
  • Push Bowling Green's home conference record to .500 on the season with a 3-3 record. 
  • Grant BGSU back-to-back conference wins for the first time this season. 
  • Mark seven straight wins over Ohio inside the Stroh Center for the Falcons.
  • Continue a streak of seven games between BGSU and OU where the home team has won.

Battle On The Block
Jamai Felt has worked his way up to the leaders in the MAC on the block. Felt has recorded 36 blocks this year, the most by anyone in the conference, averaging 1.6 blocks per game. Ohio's AJ Clayton is right there beside Felt with 35 blocks, averaging 1.8 per game after missing time. As for conference play, Felt has 24 blocks in 10 games, averaging a MAC-best 2.4 per contest with Kent State's Cli'ron Hornbeak second with 22 and 2.2 per game. 

Scouting The Bobcats
Ohio opened MAC play with a 4-0 start, but has gone 2-5 over their last seven games, giving them a 12-11 record on the season while being 6-4 within the conference. Additionally, the Bobcats are 3-9 when playing outside of Athens with wins at Buffalo and Central Michigan as well as a neutral site victory against Portland.  Leading the Falcons has been senior forward AJ Clayton. Clayton missed a few games, but returned in their last two. On the year, he's averaging 15.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game. 

BGSU vs. Ohio, All-Time
The Falcons and Bobcats will be meeting for the 156th time in program history with Bowling Green holding the all-time advantage with a record of 85-70. BGSU also has the edge when hosting the series with a record of 50-23. The Falcons have won the last six meetings in Bowling Green, dating back to the 2017-18 campaign. The home team in general has held the series with the last road win being a Bowling Green victory in Athens on Dec. 30, 2020 by a score of 83-75.

Moving And Protecting The Ball
After recording 15 assists as a team against Northern Illinois, the Falcons followed it up with 16 in the win over Coastal Carolina. Additionally, the Falcons had just 11 turnovers against NIU and 10 against Coastal. In wins this season, the Falcons are averaging 15.0 assists and 10.2 turnovers. However, in losses those numbers move to 9.1 assists and 12.9 turnovers. For the season, Bowling Green is 8-3 when committing fewer turnovers than their opponent and are 1-11 when turnovers are either even or BGSU commits more.

Butler Off The Bench
Derrick Butler came off the bench for the Falcons against Coastal Carolina and led the team in scoring with 21 points, his third time this year with 20+ in a game with two of those coming off the bench. For the year, Butler is averaging 11.5 points when coming off the bench, including a pair of 21-point outings. For the season, he's averaging 13.8 points per game, appearing in 22 of BGSU's 23 games thus far with 14 starts. 

Campbell Moves Up Program List
Javontae Campbell tallied another steal in the Falcons' last game, reaching 70 for the season. Campbell is now sixth on the program's all-time list for single-season steals. The next step will be fourth all-time, which is currently a tie between Anthony Stacey (1996-97) and David Jenkins (1981-82) with 72. Campbell's 3.04 steals per game are now third in the nation. At his current pace with 31 games on BGSU's schedule, Campbell is on track to tally 94 steals during the regular season. The current BGSU single-season steals record is set at 82 by DeMar Moore in 1996-97. As for the MAC steals record, it's held by Ball State's Bonzi Wells with 103 during the 1997-98 campaign. 

Humphrey Nearing 1,000 Points
This season, Bowling Green has already had two players eclipse 1,000 career points with Trey Thomas and Derrick Butler. Entering the season, Marcus Johnson and Javontae Campbell had already reached the mark. Now, DaJion Humphrey is next on the list. After missing time due to an injury, Humphrey has returned to the lineup for the Falcons over the last six games, including three starts. Against NIU, Humphrey tallied a season-high 11 points and now has 969 for his collegiate career, leaving him 31 shy of reaching the career milestone. For his time as a Falcon, Humphrey is averaging just over five points per game with eight games left in the regular season.
