A Bowling Green Win Would…
- Give the Falcons back-to-back MAC wins for the first time this season.
- Snap an 11-game losing streak all-time to Kent State.
- Mark the first win at home over the Golden Flashes since a 77-72 win over KSU inside the Stroh Center on March 1, 2019.
- Keep Bowling Green above .500 at home this season (8-6) as well as keep Coach Simon's all-time record at BGSU above .500 (31-29).
Johnson At The Line
Marcus Johnson is currently in the midst of making 26 straight free throws. The last miss at the line for Johnson came against Eastern Michigan on Jan. 18. Going back a game further, Johnson has made 33 of his last 34 free throw attempts dating back to Jan. 14. The stretch has pushed Johnson's free throw percentage back above 90-percent, sitting at 90.5, which ranks first in the MAC among qualified players and 11th in the nation. Last year, Johnson shot 90.8-percent at the line on 120 attempts for Wheeling.
Scouting The Golden Flashes
Since the last meeting between Bowling Green and Kent State, the Golden Flashes have tallied a 4-1 record with the loss being an 85-71 final to rival Akron. After the loss to the Zips, Kent State has rattled off four straight wins, topping Eastern Michigan (70-49), Arkansas State (76-75), Central Michigan (91-83) and Ohio (76-75). The string of wins has pushed Kent State to 17-8 on the season while being 7-5 in conference play, sitting in a tie for fourth in the standings with Ohio.
BGSU vs. Kent State, All-Time
The Falcons and Golden Flashes will be meeting for the 175th time in program history and the second time this season. Bowling Green holds the all-time series with a record of 89-85, but Kent State has won the last 11 meetings. As for meetings in Bowling Green, the Falcons are 52-29. The last win in the series for the Falcons came on March 1, 2019 with a 77-72 final at home. In the meeting earlier this season, KSU took a 75-57 score. Marcus Johnson led the Falcons with 21 points while Javontae Campbell added 16.
Humphrey Nearing 1,000 Points
This season, Bowling Green has already had two players eclipse 1,000 career points with Trey Thomas and Derrick Butler. Entering the season, Marcus Johnson and Javontae Campbell had already reached the mark. Now, DaJion Humphrey is next on the list. After missing time due to an injury, Humphrey has returned to the lineup for the Falcons. Against both NIU and Ohio, Humphrey tallied a season-high 11 points and now has 988 for his collegiate career, leaving him 12 shy of reaching the career milestone.
Campbell Moves Up Program List
Javontae Campbell tallied another pair of steals in the Falcons' last game, reaching 74 for the season. Campbell is now second on the program's all-time list for single-season steals. The next step will be the program record, which is held by DeMar Moore with 82 during the 1996-97 season. As for the MAC steals record, it's held by Ball State's Bonzi Wells with 103 during the 1997-98 campaign. Campbell's 2.96 steals per game are third in the nation. He is also five steals away from setting a new career-high after having 78 steals last season for Northern Oklahoma.
Trio Of Falcons Pulling Up From Deep
So far this season, the Falcons have three players that have attempted 130 or more three-pointers. Marcus Johnson tops the list with 156 attempts followed by Trey Thomas' 141 and Derrick Butler's 133. Bowling Green is the only team in the Mid-American Conference with three players north of the 130-mark for three-pointers attempted. In fact, only three teams in the MAC have three players north of the 100-mark, being Akron and Buffalo. Johnson, Thomas and Butler are three of 10 players in the MAC with 130 or more three attempts. No other team in the conference has more than one player on the list.
Creating Chaos On Defense
In the win over Buffalo, the Falcons proved to be disrupters on the defensive end. As a team, the Falcons swiped 11 steals and added six blocks, missing the team's season-high in steals by two and blocks by just one. Leading the way in steals was DaJion Humphrey with five for the second time this season. Additionally, Javontae Campbell has tallied five steals in a game three times, giving BGSU five games this year when a player has recorded five steals.
