Falcons' Six-Match Unbeaten Streak Comes to an End Saturday Night in Chicago

The BGSU men's soccer team lost for the first time in Missouri Valley Conference play this season, as host UIC picked up a 2-1 victory at Flames Field

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team lost for the first time in Missouri Valley Conference play this season, as host UIC picked up a 2-1 victory at Flames Field Saturday night (Oct. 5).

Bart Muns scored both goals for the Flames (6-4-0, 2-1-0 MVC), opening the scoring in the 13th minute and giving his team a two-goal lead in the 71st minute.

Trace Terry cut the UIC lead in half just over three minutes after Muns's second goal. After sophomore Bennett Painter was taken down in the penalty box, Terry converted the ensuing penalty kick to cut the Falcons' (8-2-1, 3-1-0 MVC) deficit in half.

Brendan Graves made 10 saves on the night, tying his career high.

The loss snapped a six-match unbeaten streak for the Falcons, who had not lost since Labor Day (Sept. 2). BGSU went 5-0-1 during that stretch.

NOTE OF THE NIGHT
Trace Terry now has 10 goals on the season, the highest total by a Falcon since Pat Flynn scored 14 goals in the 2014 campaign.

• Terry has scored at least one goal in five consecutive games. He is first Falcon to do so in nearly two decades, since Omari Aldridge found the back of the net in five-straight contests in 2005.

HIGHLIGHTS
• In the eighth minute of the match, after a foul on the Flames, Alberto Anaya blasted a free kick from distance. The hard, curving shot forced UIC goalkeeper Kevin Dabrowski into a reaction save.
• One minute later, a shot by Anthony Hernandez from the right side of the penalty area was blocked. There were a few cries for a handball on UIC, but a corner was awarded, which the Flames eventually cleared away.
• UIC took the lead in the 13th minute, as Bart Muns volleyed the ball out of the air and into the net off of a right-side cross.
• Soon after that goal, Bennett Painter momentarily lost the ball as he made a run into the UIC end of the field. The sophomore immediately won the ball back and fired a quick left-side cross toward Trace Terry, but Terry's header went just high.
Brendan Graves made nine of his 10 saves in the second half. He made a nice save off of a shot by Joshua Torres at the far post after a corner kick in the 48th minute of play.
• Three minutes later, Dabrowski made arguably his best play of the night, with a diving save on an Andrew Shaffer header. Shaffer had redirected a Jake Bergin  cross on frame.
• Graves made a pair of saves on Torres just 30 seconds apart midway through the half. He tipped a shot from the left side, which caused the ball to glance off of the far post. Then, the fifth-year Falcon made another diving stop, this time deflecting the ball wide of the post for a corner kick. Off of that corner, Graves grabbed the ball out of the air in a crowded penalty area.
• Muns scored again in the 71st minute. He took a pass from Jesus De Vicente in the circle above the 18, then turned, took a touch to his right and fired a shot into the lower left corner.
• Less than a minute after the goal, Graves went to the ground to make a save on another shot by Muns, a header from close range.
• In the 74th minute, Painter was taken down as he headed into the box, and a penalty kick was awarded. Terry stepped up and blasted that shot past Dabrowski to cut the BGSU deficit in half.
• Graves made yet another spectacular diving save in the 76th minute, this time lunging to stop a Muns shot after the ball seemed to be past the Falcon 'keeper.

UP NEXT
• The Falcons are home for the next two matches, beginning with a Tuesday (Oct. 5) non-conference matchup with Detroit Mercy. First touch is set for 7:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium, and admission is free.

• Then, the Orange and Brown will return to MVC action next Saturday (Oct 12), hosting Drake. The starting time for that match has been moved to 7:30 p.m.

• Both the UDM and Drake matches will be televised by BCSN in the Toledo area, and will be streamed via both the BCSN Now App and ESPN+.
