Vikings Get Past Falcons, 1-0
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland State University scored early in the second half as the Vikings picked up a 1-0 win over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team on a soggy Tuesday night (Oct. 7) at Krenzler Field.
Matteo Correia scored for the Vikings (4-2-4), taking a pass from Jacob Deever and slotting a low shot just inside the far post. Ryan Poling made six saves in goal for the hosts, while Jason Ball had three stops for the Falcons (4-6-2).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons had arguably the best first-half scoring chance for either team late in the period. With five minutes on the clock, Andrew Shaffer took a pass from Bennett Painter and fired a cross from the right side. The ball found Trace Terry near the left post, and Terry's shot rang off that post. Seconds later, Terry hit another shot, but Cleveland State goalkeeper Ryan Poling was able to deflect that effort wide of the right post.
• Terry had five of the Falcons' seven first-half shot attempts.
• The senior fired another shot on frame early in the second period after a serve from the left side, but Poling was able to get a hand on that shot, then grab the ball on one bounce.
• With just under seven minutes gone in the half, the Vikings took the lead. Matteo Correia took a Jacob Deever through ball and slid a shot from the right side into the left side of the net.
• In the 56th minute, a left-side cross by BG was knocked down in the box by Ryko Bodurov, and Joshua Saavedra, in traffic, was able to poke a shot on frame, but Poling made the stop.
• The Vikings looked to double the lead when Josip Rimac got behind the BG defense in the 58th minute, but he rolled a shot just wide of the far goalpost.
• With just over 11 minutes remaining in the match, Tyson McCoy was taken down in the penalty area with the Falcons heading forward. After a delay of several minutes due to a video review, the match continued with a CSU goal kick.
• BGSU pressed forward, and CSU missed a golden opportunity to add to the lead with just over eight minutes remaining. A right-side cross found Peleg Armendariz with the Vikes on the counterattack, but the CSU striker put his attempt well over the crossbar from six yards out.
• Just under two minutes remained when Shaffer hit a cross from the left side into the box. Terry got hit head on the ball with a diving effort, but the ball went wide.
• With 10 seconds to go, the Vikings were whistled for a foul near midfield and the clock was stopped. Goalkeeper Jason Ball took that free kick and hit a long ball into the CSU penalty area. Xavier Sims got his head on the ball and put a shot on frame, but Poling was able to grab the ball out of the air as the final seconds ticked away.
