Falcons Stop Spartans for Second-Straight Season
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Senior Trace Terry scored less than five minutes into the match, and the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team made that goal hold up. The Falcons posted a 1-0 victory over Michigan State University on Friday night (Sept. 5) at Cochrane Stadium.
For the Falcons (2-2-1), it marked the second-straight victory over the Spartans (2-2-0), as BGSU posted a 1-0 victory in East Lansing last season.
On Friday night, junior Enzo Gil made six saves in goal for the Orange and Brown, for his second clean sheet of the season. Zac Kelly had one save for the Spartans.
Terry, who hit the post with a shot just two minutes into the match, ran onto a long pass from graduate student Giovanni Soares with just under five minutes gone in the match. The diagonal ball by Soares, played from BGSU's own end of the field, sailed from the right side of the field toward the left corner of the penalty area.
Terry, facing away from goal with a defender marking him, let the ball bounce past him, then whirled to his left and uncorked a left-footed shot that found the upper-right-hand corner of the net.
The Spartans put the Falcon defense under pressure, but could not find the equalizer, as the home team came away with the win.
BGSU is now unbeaten in the last 11 home matches (9-0-2), including the last 10 matches (8-0-2) at Cochrane Stadium. BGSU's last home loss came in November of 2023.
B!G PLAYS / HOW IT HAPPENED
• With just two minutes gone in the match, Trace Terry fired a shot from the left side of the penalty area, with the ball ringing off of the far post and caroming toward the opposite side of the field.
• Less than three minutes later, Terry took another shot from the left side, this time very near the 18-yard line. And, this time, his shot found the far-side netting, as the golazo gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead. Giovanni Soares drew the lone assist on the play.
• The Spartans had a great chance to tie the score 17 minutes in. A pass by Jack Guggemos put Richie Ludwig into the box on the right side, and he fired a shot that hit the far post.
• Late in the half, the Spartans hit the post with another shot, this time by Josh Adam. That shot came on a header off of a diagonal ball by Miles Merritt.
• Early in the second half, Terry and the Falcons nearly doubled the lead. Ryko Bodurov played a cross into the box from the left side. Terry lunged past his would-be defender and got his head on the ball at the six-yard line, but the diving header went wide left.
• Several minutes later, the Spartans' Luke Spadafora put a shot on frame not long after an MSU corner kick. The shot was blocked off of the line by a BGSU player.
• Just under 19 minutes remained when Bennett Painter won the ball just outside the 18-yard box. Painter, surrounded by four Spartans, somehow managed not only to keep possession, but to fire a shot. That shot was blocked and caromed into the air, over several MSU players and into the box. Terry ran onto the ball and quickly attempted to hit a shot, but his effort went over the crossbar. Terry led all players with four total shot attempts on the night.
• Enzol Gil made a pair of saves in the final 12 minutes, including a nifty stop with under three minutes to go, as he tipped a Guggemos header over the crossbar.
