Falcons, Fueled by Fleming’s Fantastic First Frame, Fly Past Flashes
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Lexi Fleming scored 21 points in the first quarter on Wednesday evening (March 5), as the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team defeated Kent State University, 84-61, at the Stroh Center.
The Falcons (17-12, 10-7 Mid-American Conference) led from wire to wire, as Fleming scored 25 points to pace four players in double digits in the win. Paige Kohler had 17 points and a game-high eight rebounds, with Erika Porter and Amy Velasco scoring 13 points apiece.
Jenna Batsch had 25 points to lead the Golden Flashes (19-11, 11-6 MAC), with Tatiana Thomas adding 14 and Dionna Gray 10.
Fleming's 21-point quarter shattered the school record. She made 7-of-8 shots from the field, including a 6-for-7 performance from three-point range, in the quarter.
With the Flashes paying extra attention to Fleming, she attempted only five shots over the remaining three quarters, but dished out six assists to tie Velasco for game honors in the win.
As a team, BGSU shot 55.2 percent from the floor, and the Falcons went 12-of-25 (48%) from long distance. Kent State shot 39.3% from the field and 38.5% from the arc.
The Falcons had a 40-28 rebounding advantage in the win.
NOTE OF THE NIGHT: FLEMING ON FIRE
• Fifth-year Falcon Lexi Fleming, as mentioned, shattered the school record for points in a quarter, with 21. She broke the record held by Carly Santoro, who had 17 points in the second quarter of a win over Eastern Kentucky (Nov. 10, 2017).

FIRST QUARTER
• Lexi Fleming set the tone for the first quarter, taking a pass from Amy Velasco and knocking down a three-point try less than 10 seconds into the game. With 90 seconds gone, she hit another long-range try from the other side of the court, and when the fifth-year Falcon was fouled two minutes into the game and split a pair of free-throw tries, the score was Lexi Fleming 7, Kent State 0.
• Fleming found a cutting Paige Kohler for a layup and a nine-point advantage, Jenna Batsch got the Flashes on the board with a catch-and-shoot three just over three minutes into the contest, but Kohler answered with a driving layup.
• The teams traded buckets before Kohler spotted Fleming making a baseline cut, with the sophomore's pass resulting in a layup and a 15-5 lead. Then, Kohler found Fleming for a corner three and an 18-5 advantage at the media timeout.
• In the first five-plus minutes of the game, Fleming had 12 points, more than doubling KSU's team total. But, she was far from finished.
• The first possession out of the timeout saw Fleming take a pass and hit another three-ball. A pair of free throws ended BGSU's 8-0 run, but Kohler hit a trailing three to give the Falcons a 24-7 lead.
• Then, Fleming drained yet another three-point try with just over two minutes left in the period. The Flashes put together a quick 7-0 run, with a Dionna Gray triple cutting the BG lead to nine, but Fleming made her sixth three-pointer of the quarter in the waning seconds, giving her 21 points and her team a 30-18 lead.
• In that first period, the Falcons shot 64.7%, going 11-of-17. That included a 7-for-10 performance from three-point range. Fleming was 7-of-8 overall and 6-of-7 from the arc in the opening 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• Kohler's three-pointer opened the scoring, but Gray answered with a conventional three-point play. But, Johnea Donahue converted a driving layup attempt, and when Kendal Moxey kicked the ball out to Velasco for a corner three, BGSU had a 38-23 lead. And, Fleming found Laila Harrison for a nifty hesitation layup.
• An Erika Porter layup gave BGSU a 7-0 run and a 42-23 lead, and after the Flashes turned the ball back over to the Falcons, Porter's acrobatic spinning layup pushed the lead over 20 points. The fifth-year collegian's third consecutive layup made it a 46-23 game.
• Batsch's layup snapped BG's 11-0 run, and she would answer Porter's personal 6-0 run with a 6-0 run of her own, cutting the Falcons' lead to 46-29 at the half.
THIRD QUARTER
• Batsch began the second-half scoring with a step-back three, but after Gray's driving layup, Kohler hit a contested turnaround jumper at the shot-clock buzzer to stop KSU's 11-0 run. Two Tatiana Thomas tosses from the line, however, cut the BG lead to 12 once again.
• Velasco knocked down a three-point try, and after Batsch hit a floater, Donahue drove and flipped the ball to Taya Ellis for a layup and a 53-38 lead. The teams traded hoops, and after a scoreless drought of nearly two minutes, a Batsch jumper got KSU within nine points late in the period. But, Velasco found Keiryn McGuff for a layup, and after the teams traded free throws, the Falcons led by 11 after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• Porter hit a tough contested layup early in the period, and a Velasco layup gave the Falcons a 5-0 run to open the quarter. Thomas quickly answered with a layup, but Velasco responded with an and-one jumper, sinking the charity toss to give her team a 68-51 lead.
• Fleming answered a Thomas layup with one of her own, and after the Falcons forced a shot-clock violation, Donahue's left-side three-pointer put BGSU ahead by 20, 73-53. A Kohler triple made it a 76-55 game at the media timeout, and Porter's putback extended that lead to 23 points just over a minute later.
• Porter hit a pair of free throws, with Jasmine Fearne making a driving layup and Harrison closing the game's scoring by going 2-for-2 from the stripe.
