Falcons Fall to Buffalo, 70-60
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Chellia Watson scored a game-high 24 points as the University at Buffalo rallied for a 70-60 win over the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team Wednesday night (Jan. 8), in Mid-American Conference action at the Stroh Center.
Senior Amy Velasco had 22 points to pace three players in double digits in scoring for the Falcons (7-7, 1-2 MAC). Sophomores Paige Kohler and Keiryn McGuff scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, while fifth-year player Erika Porter had seven points and 11 rebounds. Kohler had eight boards on the night.
Lani Cornfield joined Watson in double figures for the Bulls (13-1, 2-1 MAC), with 13 points.
The Falcons got out to a scorching start, making 7-of-7 shots to begin the game, but the Bulls rallied back and took the lead for good on a Cornfield bucket early in the fourth period.
BGSU will be back in action on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 11) at Miami.
FIRST QUARTER
• The Falcons, as mentioned, got off to a hot start. BGSU scored on the first three possessions, and got points on seven of the first nine trips down the court on the night. Lexi Fleming lobbed the ball inside to Erika Porter less than 15 seconds into the game, and Amy Velasco scored on a driving layup and an and-one floater. The senior's free throw after the second bucket made it a 7-0 game with just 1:12 elapsed.
• Keiryn McGuff took a pass from fellow sophomore Paige Kohler and hit a three-pointer – the first of her career – and McGuff then completed a conventional three-point play, and BGSU's lead was 13-0 with 7:04 remaining in the opening period.
• A Watson jumper got the visitors on the board, and Ariana Seawell followed with a tip-in, but Kohler answered with a driving layup, then found Velasco for a triple moments later, giving the hosts an 18-6 advantage.
• Free throws from McGuff and Kohler completed the Falcons' first-quarter scoring, and a pair of late charity tosses by the Bulls got the BG lead to 22-13 after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• UB cut the BG lead to five points as Kristen Lewis-Williams made four free throws in the first 74 seconds of the quarter, but Jasmine Fearne answered with a deep three-pointer for a 25-17 lead.
• Velasco converted a layup, and Porter powered her way inside for a layup of her own and a 29-19 lead. Then, Fleming spotted Kohler for a corner three and a 13-point lead.
• But, Watson answered with a three, beginning a 9-0 run for the Bulls. Watson and Lewis-Williams each scored during that span, and after a Sitota Gines bucket, two Watson tosses got the visitors within four points. Sophomore Johnea Donahue, however, took a Fleming handoff, drove the baseline and hit a reverse layup as the horn sounded, giving the hosts a 34-28 lead at the break.
THIRD QUARTER
• Lani Cornfield opened the second-half scoring, before McGuff swished a turnaround one-hander. But, Cornfield scored the next four points, with a transition layup cutting BGSU's lead to just two points, 36-34.
• Kohler took a Velasco pass and drained a left-wing three-point try, and after a UB layup, Kohler returned the favor, with a cross-court pass that resulted in Velasco's right-wing triple. BGSU had a 42-36 lead.
• A Velasco turnaround shot gave the Orange and Brown an eight-point lead, and the margin stayed in that range for the next few minutes. Porter scored inside with 90 seconds left in the period, but Watson quickly answered with a jumper, and the BGSU lead was 50-45 after 30 minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER
• UB scored on the opening possession of the final period, and after Velasco hit a pair of free throws, the Bulls went on a 10-0 run. Watson's jumper cut the BG lead to three, and she then hit a layup at the 8:03 mark. After a BG miss, a long pass ahead resulted in a 2-on-1 advantage and a Cornfield layup for the visitors with 7:35 to go.
• Terah Harness got a driving layup to go, and Watson's free throws made it a 57-52 game with 4:32 on the clock. Velasco took a Fleming pass and knocked down a shot from the arc, but the Bulls got a Cornfield layup, then a steal and two Lewis-Williams free throws to take a 61-55 lead. The visitors' lead reached 10 points before Donahue's and-one layup with just 1:19 to go. The sophomore hit the ensuing free throw, but BG would draw no closer.
UP NEXT
• BGSU will hit the road for the next two contests, beginning with a Saturday (Jan. 11) matchup at Miami. That game will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Millett Hall.
• Then, the Falcons will face Ohio in Athens next Wednesday night, Jan. 15, before returning home to meet Northern Illinois three nights later (Sat., Jan. 18).
