Falcons End Regular-Season Schedule With 20-Point Road Win
YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team took care of business on Saturday afternoon (March 8), wrapping up the regular-season schedule with an 87-67 road win over Eastern Michigan University at the George Gervin GameAvove Center.
Lexi Fleming had a game-high 21 points to pace four double-digit scorers for the Falcons (18-12, 11-7 Mid-American Conference). Paige Kohler had 18 points, while Amy Velasco and Erika Porter added 17 and 15, respectively.
Kohler added seven rebounds and seven assists in the win, while Porter was a perfect 6-for-6 from the field.
The Eagles (2-27, 1-17 MAC) got 19 points from Sisi Eleko and 18 from Olivia Smith.
FIRST QUARTER
• After scoring a school-record 21 points in the first quarter of Wednesday's (March 5) win over Kent State, Lexi Fleming had another successful start in Ypsilanti on Saturday. Fleming had 13 points in the first 10 minutes of the contest, as BGSU shot 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the field in the opening period.
• Fleming began the scoring on a layup after Paige Kohler grabbed a defensive rebound and fired a long pass downcourt. After the hosts got on the board, Erika Porter's turnaround jumper put the Falcons back on top, and when EMU answered again, Johnea Donahue kicked a pass out to Kohler for a right-side three-pointer and a 7-5 lead. Amy Velasco's pull-up jumper put BG up by four.
• Mackenzie Amalia scored for the Eagles, but another Kohler long pass led to another Fleming layup. Then, a long three-point try by Kohler dropped through the net to give the Falcons a 14-9 advantage.
• Out of the media timeout, Kohler faked another three-point try, took a dribble and knocked down a long two-pointer. Moments later, the sophomore found Fleming for a corner three and a 19-10 lead. Kohler had four assists in the first quarter alone.
• Another Kohler pass resulted in another Fleming triple, and Fleming's driving layup gave the Falcons a 24-10 lead. The Eagles ended the quarter on a 10-3 run to get within eight points after the opening period.
SECOND QUARTER
• BGSU began the period on a quick 4-0 run, with Velasco assisting both Porter and Fleming for layups. The Eagles answered, but Taya Ellis worked around her would-be defender for a layup, and two Kohler free throws gave BG a 36-22 lead.
• Kohler hit a layup heading into the media timeout, and moments later, Ellis got an offensive rebound and found Jasmine Fearne for a layup and a 41-26 lead.
• Laila Harrison took a Kohler pass and knocked down a corner three, and Velasco made a pair of free throws, then took an Ellis pass and laid the ball up and in. An EMU buzzer-beating bucket cut the BG lead to 48-32 at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• The margin stayed in the low- to mid-teens for much of the third quarter. Velasco drove and lobbed the ball for Porter for a layup, but Olivia Smith answered with a triple. Porter drew Sisi Eleko's third foul of the game early in the period, and hit a pair of free throws for a 52-37 lead.
• Smith hit a trey, and knocked down a step-back triple just over a minute later. Fleming made a pair of charity tosses, but another long-range shot by Smith cut the Falcons' lead to 10 points, 58-48. Smith had four three-pointers in the first four-plus minutes of the quarter.
• After a timeout by the Falcons, Porter kicked the ball out to Velasco for a right-wing triple, and after an offensive rebound by Kieryn McGuff, Velasco knocked down a shot from the top of the arc for a 64-48 BGSU lead. Kohler answered a pair of Eleko free throws with a driving layup, and after an Ellis offensive board, another second-chance three-ball by Velasco gave the Falcons a 69-50 lead.
FOURTH QUARTER
• The Falcons did not let the Eagles cut into that lead in the fourth quarter. Donahue hit a layup, and after Smith knocked down a triple try, six quick points gave the visitors a 21-point lead. Porter scored inside, Velasco hit a turnaround shot, and Donahue's transition layup made it a 77-56 game.
• Kohler's back-door pass found a cutting Fleming for a layup, and Ellis scored inside before handing the ball to Kohler for another layup. Fleming hit a turnaround jumper, and Kristiana Kulackovska knocked down a pair of free-throw tries to cap the Falcons' scoring.
UP NEXT
• BGSU will be the sixth seed for the MAC Tournament, and the Falcons will face third-seeded Buffalo in Wednesday's (March 12) quarterfinal round in downtown Cleveland. The Falcons and Bulls will meet at Rocket Arena in the fourth and final game of the day, which is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
• The BGSU-Buffalo survivor will advance to Friday's (March 14) semifinal round to face either Toledo or Central Michigan. The championship game is set for next Saturday (March 15).
