BGSU Earns Special Mention on WBCA Academic Honor Roll
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball student-athletes have been recognized for their success in the classroom yet again. The Falcons earned special mention on the 2023-24 Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll, which was announced Wednesday morning (July 24) by the WBCA office.
BGSU was ranked 41st of the 360 NCAA Division-I women's basketball-playing institutions in the nation, after recording a team GPA of 3.508 in the 2023-24 season.
Youngstown State was ranked first in the entire nation in the 2023-24 season with a cumulative GPA of 3.868. John Nicolais, now a member of the BGSU coaching staff, served as interim head coach for the Penguins in '23-24.
The WBCA Academic Top 25 recognizes NCAA Division I, II and III, NAIA and two-year college women's basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined GPAs inclusive of all student-athletes on their rosters for the entire season. The 2023-24 season is the 29th in which the WBCA has compiled the honor rolls.
The Falcons, as mentioned, had a team GPA of 3.508 for the '23-24 campaign. A team's GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of hours attempted by all team members in the academic terms (semesters or quarters) that the season spans. Weighted grades are converted to a 4.0 scale. The GPA's are rounded to the nearest thousandth of a point. Teams are nominated for the honor by a WBCA-member head coach. A team must have a 3.000 or better GPA to be nominated.
"The WBCA is pleased to recognize those women's basketball programs that have committed themselves to excellence on the court and in the classroom," said WBCA Executive Director Danielle Donehew. "The 112 teams we honor this year strive to achieve all-around success and we commend their efforts. Congratulations!"
