Velasco Named to All-MAC First Team
CLEVELAND, Ohio (BGSU Strategic Communications) – Four members of the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team were recognized on Tuesday morning (March 11), as the All-Mid-American Conference Team was announced.
Amy Velasco was named to the All-MAC First Team, while Lexi Fleming collected all-conference third-team honors and Paige Kohler earned All-MAC Honorable Mention.
Additionally, Johnea Donahue was named to both the MAC's All-Freshman Team and the league's All-Defensive Team.
Velasco, a native of Centerville, Ohio (Centerville), leads the Falcons in both scoring and assists, with 16.1 points and 4.9 assists per game. One of three Falcons to start all 30 games this season to date, Velasco has scored in double figures in 27 of those 30 games, including a 30-point explosion in a win over Toledo, and she is second on the club with 52 three-point field goals made.
Velasco currently leads the entire MAC in minutes played (35.96 mpg), three-point field-goal percentage (43.3%) and free-throw pct. (92.9%), and she is fifth in the league in both assists and assist/turnover ratio and sixth in scoring. Velasco has made 96 career starts and has 78 career double-digit scoring games.
Velasco has career totals of 1,521 points and 494 assists at BGSU, ranking eighth on the BGSU scoring list and sixth on the assists chart. She is one of only two players in program history to score more than 1,500 points and dish out more than 400 assists.
Fleming, who hails from Cincinnati, Ohio (Mercy McAuley), has played in 22 games this season, starting the last 21, and has 13.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.1 steals per game this winter. She is third on the Falcons in both scoring and assists and second in steals, and Fleming has drilled 50 three-pointers in her 22 games.
That three-point total includes six in the first quarter alone in last week's win over Kent State, when she scored a school-record 21 points in that quarter. Fleming has scored in double digits 17 times, including in each of the last seven contests, and she averaged 23.0 ppg in last week's two wins.
In MAC games this season, Fleming was third in the conference in assist/turnover ratio (2.11) and tied for fourth in steals (2.28 spg), while ranking in the top 20 in the conference in five other categories.
Fleming has played in a total of 95 games in her Falcon career. BGSU has a record of 69-26 in those 95 games, including a 38-15 ledger in MAC regular-season play, a 42-17 mark in all games (regular season and tournament) against conference foes and a 34-8 record at the Stroh Center.
Fleming has 1,196 career points, good for 25th in BGSU history, and she is 10th in school annals in points per game (12.59). Additionally, Fleming is third in BG history in career steals per game (2.15), fourth in three-pointers made per game (1.92) and eighth in both total steals (204) and total three-pointers made (182).
Kohler, a native of Olmsted Falls, Ohio (Olmsted Falls), is second on the team in scoring, rebounding and assists, with 13.4 points, 4.7 boards and 3.5 dimes per outing. Kohler, who has flirted with a triple-double on numerous occasions this season, has made a team-leading 74 three-point field goals to date.
Kohler, who has started all 30 games, is ranked third in the MAC in minutes (34.83 mpg) and fourth in the league in assist/turnover ratio (1.78). She is also listed among the top-20 players in the MAC in four other categories. In MAC games only, Kohler led the entire league in assist/turnover ratio (2.22).
Kohler, who has started all 61 of BGSU's games since her arrival on campus, heads into the Buffalo game with impressive career totals of 745 points, 271 rebounds and 217 assists. She currently ranks 13th in BGSU history in career scoring average (12.21 ppg), and is eighth in career assists per game (3.56).
Donahue, a native of Fort Wayne, Ind. (Snider), has played in 27 games, making 16 total starts this season. She has started the last 11 games, and BGSU is 9-2 in that time. Donahue has 7.4 ppg and a team-leading 2.41 spg. She leads the entire MAC in steals per game.
In MAC play, Donahue scored 7.9 points per contest and shot 49.5% from the field, good for second on the team and 10th in the league. She also had 4.0 rpg in conference games to rank third on the team.
Donahue's steal total includes an eight-steal game – falling just two shy of the BGSU single-game record – in a win over Toledo,
The Falcons are 18-12 overall, and BGSU finished with a record of 11-7 in MAC play, good for a fifth-place tie in the conference standings. The Falcons, the sixth seed for the MAC Tournment, will face third-seeded Buffalo in Wednesday's (March 12) quarterfinal round at Rocket Arena in downtown Cleveland. That game, the fourth of the day, is scheduled to begin at approximately 6:30 p.m.
