Falcons Drop a Heartbreaker to Buffalo, 65-63
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team bowed out of the Mid-American Conference Tournament on Wednesday night (March 12), with a narrow 65-63 loss to the University at Buffalo. The league tourney quarterfinal-round matchup took place at Rocket Arena.
Erika Porter scored 19 points to lead four players in double figures for the Falcons (18-13 [11-7 MAC]), the sixth seed for the tournament. Lexi Fleming had 16 points, with Paige Kohler adding 14 and Amy Velasco 10. Kohler dished out a game-high six assists.
The Bulls (25-6 [13-5 MAC]), seeded third for the tournament, got 27 points from Chellia Watson. Kristen Lewis-Williams added 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Lani Cornfield scored 14.
FIRST QUARTER
• The teams combined to shoot just 11-for-31 from the floor in the first quarter, scoring only 23 total points in that 10-minute stretch. Neither team scored at all for the first two and a half minutes, but after the Bulls took the lead, Paige Kohler drove the land and hit a floater, then grabbed a defensive rebound to give the ball back to the Falcons. The sophomore then drove the lane again, this time dishing a pass to Erika Porter for an open layup and a 4-2 lead.
• The Bulls scored the next four points, but Kohler fed a cutting Amy Velasco for a back-door layup to tie the game at 6-6.
• After a huge block by Keiryn McGuff, followed by a defensive rebound, Kohler drove the baseline and hit a reverse layup to tie the game at 8-all. But, Chellia Watson knocked down a three-point try, and after a long Lexi Fleming pass resulted in a Johnea Donahue layup, Lani Cornfield's driving layup gave the Bulls a 13-10 lead after 10 minutes.
SECOND QUARTER
• The Falcons began the second quarter on a 7-0 run. A Donahue steal – one of her team-high four – led to a BG possession that ended with a Porter putback. Kohler kicked the ball out to Fleming for a left-side jumper, and Donahue then found Fleming for a three-pointer from the right wing and a 17-13 Falcon lead.
• Fleming followed that five-point flurry by nearly coming up with a steal near midcourt, then drawing an offensive foul on the Bulls' Paula Lopez.
• Kirsten Lewis-Williams scored for UB, but Fleming drew another charge on the Bulls, and moments later, Velasco got to the line and hit a pair of shots for a 19-15 lead.
• The Falcons' defensive success continued as Emily Siesel drew a charge on Watson heading into the media timeout. Then, Porter's nifty spin move left her would-be defender in the dust, with the resulting layup giving the Brown and Orange a 21-15 lead.
• Jordyn Beaty answered with a foul-line jumper, but Velasco lobbed the ball inside for a Porter jump-stop layup, and Velasco then drew another charge on Watson. But, the Bulls got a free throw, then a Lani Cornfield pull-up jumper, to cut the BG lead to 23-20. The Falcons doubled that lead, as Kohler drove the baseline and kicked the ball to Fleming for a corner three, before another Cornfield jumper made it a 26-22 game at the intermission.
THIRD QUARTER
• The Bulls scored the first four points of the second half to tie the game, and after Velasco hit a foul-line runner with the shot clock winding down, Watson's second-chance three gave UB a 29-28 lead just two minutes into the third period.
• Fleming, however, answered with a three-ball, and Velasco took a Porter handoff and hit a foul-line jumper. Moments later, Donahue's 'extra pass' resulted in a Kohler triple and a 36-30 lead. Cornfield knocked down a jumper, but Kohler hit a trey for the second-straight possession, giving BG a 39-32 lead.
• A nifty move by Fleming resulted in a shot off glass, and Porter scored inside after a Velasco lob, for a 43-34 advantage. A Fleming triple try rattled out and Watson hit a runner, but Velasco found Porter for another layup that turned into a three-point play, with the free throw giving the Falcons a 46-36 lead.
• And, when Kohler spotted Fleming for a corner three, the Orange and Brown led by 13. Siesel dove to the floor for a steal late in the period, which ended with the Falcons up 12.
FOURTH QUARTER
• But, Watson and the Bulls would rally. UB sandwiched a pair of buckets around a Porter layup, but another Porter bucket gave BG a 54-43 lead with 8:13 to go.
• A Lewis-Williams transition layup, however, was followed by a Watson three out top, cutting the BG lead to six. Velasco found a wide-open Taya Ellis for a layup, but another Watson trey cut the margin to five, 56-51.
• After a Porter free throw, Watson's three-point play cut the BG lead to 57-54, and Cornfield's two free throws made it a one-point game. Lewis-Williams split a pair of tosses, and the game was tied with 4:07 left. UB came up with a steal, but Porter blocked Watson's driving layup attempt.
• Kohler was fouled and made a pair of free throws with 2:50 to go, putting her team ahead, 59-57, but a putback by Alexis Davis tied the game with 2:28 on the clock.
• Kohler drove and banked a shot off glass with 1:57 left, but Watson answered with a jumper just seven seconds later. Then, after a BGSU shot/pass was blocked, a Lewis-Williams runout gave the Bulls the lead, and BG used a timeout.
• Out of that timeout, Velasco was fouled, and she hit two shots from the stripe with 49.2 seconds to go. The Bulls missed a shot, with McGuff grabbing the rebound and BGSU using a timeout with 31.0 seconds remaining. But, a turnover gave the ball back to the Bulls, and after a UB timeout, Watson made a layup with 10.5 seconds to go. A turnover and a BG foul sent Lewis-Williams to the line with just 1.1 seconds remaining. She missed both of her free-throw tries, and Fleming grabbed the rebound after the second miss, but there was not enough time for the Falcons to get a shot off
