Lamparty's Late Equalizer Gives Falcons 1-1 Draw with Zips
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Junior Gabby Lamparty scored with just 25 seconds remaining in the match, as the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team battled the University of Akron to a 1-1 draw Sunday afternoon (Oct. 26). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Cochrane Stadium.
With the result, the Falcons (8-2-8, 3-1-7 MAC) remain in the running for a MAC Tournament berth heading into the final day of the regular season. Currently, BGSU and Eastern Michigan are tied for sixth and final seed for the league tourney.
The Zips (4-9-4, 1-7-3 MAC) took the lead less than nine minutes into the match, on a header by Rielly Chesna after a corner kick.
The Falcons had a 12-7 advantage in total shot attempts and a 6-1 lead in shots on goal, but with under a minute to go, BGSU still trailed.
But, junior Emma Butera won a challenge in the Akron end of the field, near the BG bench, and knocked the ball to fellow junior Emma Stransky. Stransky took the ball across the top of the 18-yard box and slid a short pass to Lamparty, a defender by trade, slotted the ball past UA goalkeeper Sara Bower, and her sliding shot found the far-side netting.
B!G PLAYS / THINGS THAT HAPPENED
• The Zips, as mentioned, took the lead early. UA had back-to-back corner kicks, and the second one was taken by Addison Hall. Hall played a curving kick into the six-yard box, and Rielly Chesna was there to head the ball into the far side of the net.
• Early in the second half, the Zips looked to double the lead on a counterattack. Rachel Wenzel and Emma King worked the ball upfield. Wenzel played a return pass to a cutting King who neared the 18-yard line and slid a pass along that line toward Olivia Heskett. Heskett met the ball and hit a shot, but Jayna Searles blocked that effort and BG was able to clear.
• Just under the hour mark, Emma Stransky was hauled down as she looked to race past the last Akron defender with the ball. A yellow card was assessed, and Emme Butera took the ensuing free kick, but her blast sailed over the goal.
• With 24 minutes to go, the Falcons won a corner kick. Butera put that kick into the center of the box, and Gabby Lamparty got her head on the ball, but UA defender Kaitlyn Rogowski, stationed beside the right post, was able to block the shot for a 'team save' that kept the Zips in the lead.
• With just under 19 minutes remaining, Lizzie Bultynck and Ellie Pool combined to get the ball to Lexi White in the penalty area. Pool's diagonal ball found White on the right side of the box. White cut the ball back, and it was deflected by a UA player, but the BG junior was still able to get a shot off. Goalkeeper Sara Bower, who had come off her line, was able to block White's shot from point-blank range.
• Three minutes remained when Taylor Green found Pool on the left side. Pool's cross bounced off several players in a crowded penalty area. It came out of the box, but Audrey Oliver put it back into the mixer, and Stransky got her head on the ball. The junior's shot was on goal, but Bower made the stop.
