BGSU Battles Buffalo to 1-1 Draw

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Emily Hollar scored in the 76th minute as the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team battled the University at Buffalo to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 13). The Mid-American Conference matchup took place inside Cochrane Stadium.

Freshman Payton O'Malley made six saves, including several spectacular stops, in goal for the Falcons (6-4-3, 3-2-2 MAC).

O'Malley made four saves in the opening half, and the match went into the 74th minute with the teams locked in a scoreless draw. But, the Bulls (9-1-4, 4-1-2 MAC) capitalized on a BGSU turnover to take the lead on a goal by Carolyn Hinkle.

But, just two-and-a-half minutes later, the Falcons equalized. Michelle Hochstadt played a right-side cross into the box, and Hollar got a boot on it at the six-yard line on the near side. The ball was deflected, but Hollar was the first one to the rebound, firing a shot from the right side. That ball was deflected, and a lunging UB defender then cleared the ball away, but it had already crossed the goal line.

O'Malley had one more spectacular save in her, as she somehow denied an open Jasmine Guerber on a header off of a left-side serve. Guerber put her shot on frame from the six-yard line in the center of the box, but O'Malley kept the ball out of the goal with a diving effort to her right, and Lexi Czerwien cleared the ball out of the penalty area with just over seven minutes to go.

NOTE OF THE DAY
Emily Hollar became only the fifth player to score against Buffalo this season. The Bulls entered Sunday's match having allowed only four goals in 13 total matches, and just one goal in six MAC contests.

HIGHLIGHTS
• The first half featured nine total shot attempts –all by the Bulls – and zero fouls by either team.
• Midway through the first half, the Bulls thought they had taken the lead. Olivia Bizzoni brought the ball along the 18-yard line on the left side, and played a diagonal ball that was headed into the net by Jasmine Guerber. But, the Bulls were offside on the play, and the match remained scoreless.
• Just over a minute later, a pass found Kelly Severini behind the BGSU defense. Severini hit a shot in stride from just inside the 18-yard line, but Payton O'Malley was there to make the save.
• Fourteen minutes remained in the first half when O'Malley made another impressive save, this time off the boot of Arianna Zumpano after a BG giveaway. O'Malley was moving from her right to her left across the goalmouth, but was able to stop her momentum and dive back to her right to stop the shot.
• With under five minutes to go before the break, the BUlls put together an impressive display of passing, working the ball toward the BGSU end of the field. Zumpano fired another shot, but again, O'Malley was there to make the stop, diving and getting her hand on a ball that looked to be headed toward the far corner of the net.
• The Falcons had a few more forays into the offensive end of the field in the second half than then had in the first. But, UB would be first to get on the board. Carolyn Hinkle pounced on an errant pass on the left side of the field. Hinkle took one touch, then fired a curving shot that found the far side of the net. The unassisted goal gave the Bulls a 1-0 lead with just under 17 minutes remaining.
• But, BG got on the board just 2:28 later. Jaden Frigerio took an Emme Butera pass on the right side of the field and in turn slid a pass to Michelle Hochstadt. Hochstadt's crossing ball would lead to Emily Hollar's game-tying goal.
• Then, with just over seven minutes on the clock, O'Malley made arguably her most spectacular save of the day (on a day when she made numerous impressive stops). She robbed Guerber of a goal, saving the UB striker's powerful header from six yards out.

A FEW MORE FALCON NOTES
Emily Hollar's goal was her third of the season and the fourth of her career. She is tied for second on the Falcons in goals this season, and is third in points, with six.
Michelle Hochstadt's assist on Hollar's goal was her team-leading fourth of the season.
