Falcons, Bobcats Share the Points after Lamparty's Late Equalizer

ATHENS, Ohio – Gabby Lamparty's goal with under eight minutes remaining lifted the Bowling Green University women's soccer team into a 1-1 draw with Ohio University on Thursday afternoon (Sept. 18). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Chessa Field.

Emme Butera assisted on the tying goal for the Falcons (6-1-2, 1-0-1 MAC), who are off to the best start in program history. After Emma Stransky was fouled approximately 40 yards from goal, Butera's long free kick sailed into the penalty area, where Lamparty headed it back across the goalmouth and into the far corner of the net.

The Bobcats (3-4-2, 1-0-1 MAC) had taken the lead with just 12:40 to go, as Iro Fakinou scored after a BGSU turnover. But, the Falcons trailed for under six minutes before Lamparty scored the equalizer.

The Falcons had advantages in total shot attempts (9-6), shots on goal (6-3) and corner kicks (3-1). Payton O'Malley made two saves in net for the Orange and Brown, while Celeste Sloma had five stops for the Bobcats.

BGSU will take a seven-match unbeaten streak – tied for the third-longest such streak in school history – into Sunday's home match against the defending MAC champions.

NOTE OF THE DAY
• The Falcons, as mentioned, are now 6-1-2 on the season. That is the best start in program history.
• BGSU went 6-1-1 in the spring of 2021, ending that abbreviated season with a trip to the NCAA Championships. That team played only those eight matches due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
• Prior to this season, the best nine-game start in BG history was set by the 2008 team (5-2-2) and matched by both the 2016 and '17 squads (each started 6-3-0).
• The 2025 season is the 29th in the history of the program, which began in 1997.

ALSO NOTEWORTHY
• The Falcons are now 5-0-2 in the last seven matches, since BGSU's lone loss of the season (1-0 vs. Illinois on Aug. 17). BGSU's unbeaten streak is tied for the third longest in school history.
• The school record is an 11-match unbeaten streak (9-0-2) by the 2005 team. The 2018 Falcons had a 10-match unbeaten streak (9-0-1), while both the 2007 (5-0-2) and 2019 teams (7-0-0) each had seven-game streaks.
• Three of those four teams – the 2005, '18 and '19 clubs – went on to win MAC championships.

ADDITIONAL FALCON NOTES
• Junior Gabby Lamparty now has two goals and six points on the season. She is tied for second on the Falcons in goals, assists (two) and points.
• Classmate Emme Butera's assist was her year and the fifth of her career. She now has nine career points.
Senior Emily Hollar was in the starting lineup on Thursday. For Hollar, it was her seventh career start with the Falcons, but her first this season.
• Through nine matches, a total of 19 different Falcons now have started at least one match in 2025. Twenty different players started games in 2024. The school record for most players to start at least one match in a season is 22, set in 2004 and matched in both 2007 and 2010.
Payton O'Malley has a goals-against average of 0.67 on the year and a 1.12 GAA in her BGSU career. O'Malley and the BG back line have allowed six goals in 810 minutes this season to date.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• In the seventh minute, Emma Stransky got her boot on a right-side cross from Isabella Mazzaferro, and put a shot on frame, but Ohio goalkeeper Celeste Sloma was able to make the save.
• Midway through the half, Emme Butera put a diagonal ball into the box, and Emily Hollar got her head on the ball and put a hard shot on goal. Sloma, however, was able to tip the shot over the bar, and after the ensuing corner kick, another shot by Hollar was off target.
• After a turnover, Ohio's first shot attempt of the day came just under 30 minutes into the match. But, Jaimason Brooker's effort was tipped wide by Payton O'Malley at the near post, and the sophomore goalkeeper then went high in the air to grab the ensuing Ohio corner kick.
• Late in the period, Evie Underhill stole the ball in the Ohio end of the field and was unceremoniously dumped just outside the penalty area on the right side. After a yellow card was issued to a Bobcat, Butera's free kick found the head of Gabby Lamparty, but the shot was deflected into the air before Sloma grabbed it.
• Early in the second half, Mazzaferro received a long pass forward and hit a shot from distance, but Sloma was able to parry the ball and grab it on one bounce.
• In the 59th minutes of the match, Stransky tipped an errant Bobcat backpass, knocking it past the last Ohio defender. But, she was tripped as she attempted to maneuver past that player. The ensuing free kick was knocked out of the box by the Bobcats.
• Moments later, Stransky headed into the box and put a low cross near the back post, but no teammate was there. Just over a minute after that, BG was buzzing again, as Mazzaferro's cross resulted in a shot by Hollar that was blocked by a defender.
• The Bobcats took the lead with 12:40 to go. After a turnover in the Falcons' defensive end, Brooker quickly fired a shot from the left side that caromed off of the crossbar. Iro Fakinou was first to the rebound on the right side, and put a low, turnaround shot into the left side of the net.
• Stransky was fouled, and Butera's free kick from approximately 40 yards away from goal, on the left side, headed toward the far side of the 18-yard box. Lamparty was there, and headed the ball back across, finding the upper-left-hand corner of the net to tie the score.

UP NEXT
• The Falcons will end the month of September with home contests vs. Western Michigan (Sept. 21) and Central Michigan (Sept. 28) on back-to-back Sundays. Each match will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Stadium, and admission is free to all BGSU home soccer action.
• Then, the Orange and Brown will open the month of October with a pair of short trips north, taking on Toledo on Thursday, Oct. 2, and Eastern Michigan three days later (Sunday, Oct. 5).
