BGSU Battles Bobcats in Tuesday Twinbill at Meserve
FIRST PITCH...
• The Bowling Green State University softball team wraps up a five-game homestand with a tax-day twinbill against the preseason Mid-American Conference favorite. Head coach Michelle Gardner and the Falcons face Ohio University on Tuesday afternoon (April 15), with first pitch of the opener scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
SENIOR DAY SUCCESS
• Three players homered in the same inning, and two freshmen combined for 12 shutout innings in the circle, as the Falcons posted a Saturday (April 12) sweep of visiting Western Michigan. The Falcons captured the doubleheader by scores of 8-0 (five innings) and 4-0, respectively, at Meserve Field.
• The Falcons (15-25, 7-9 MAC) scored in every inning of the opener, hitting three homers in a four-batter span in the third inning. Cameron Kaufman and Scarlet Anderson began the inning with back-to-back bombs – the first career homer for each player – and after Ava McKee singled, Kendall Mathews hit a two-run blast to give BG a 7-0 lead.
• In the second game, Addie Martin and Hannah Hunt each went 3-for-3, and that duo combined to drive in all four runs.
• In the circle, freshmen Morgan Beckham and Sydney Marshall combined to blank the Broncos on the afternoon. Beckham threw a complete-game shutout in the five-inning win in the opener, and Marshall allowed just three hits and no runs in game two before leaving the game two batters into the sixth inning.
• In that second game, Beckham came on in relief and, after issuing a walk to load the bases with no outs, proceeded to retire each of the next six hitters to lock down the shutout win.
SENIOR DAY STATS, STORYLINES AND SIDEBARS
• Saturday, as mentioned, was Senior Day at Meserve Field, as the Falcons' seniors – Scarlet Anderson, Ellie Price, Wynnie Reid, Madi Young and student manager Jaydon Romero – recognized in ceremonies prior to the first game.
• Saturday's opener marked the second-straight season that the Falcons posted a run-rule win in the opening game of a Senior Day doubleheader. Last spring, BGSU beat Northern Illinois, 11-3, on Senior Day (April 27, 2024).
• In that NIU game, just as in Saturday's WMU opener, a BGSU senior homered on her Senior Day. Last season, Peyton Dolejs hit a three-run shot in the third inning of that victory.
• On Saturday, Anderson also homered in the third inning. The blast was the first of Anderson's collegiate career, and was one of three round-trippers in the inning.
MORE ON THOSE HOMERS...
• BGSU hit three homers in a game for the first time this season. It was the team's first three-dinger game in nearly three years, since a win at Kent State on May 7, 2022.
• BGSU had not hit three homers in an inning since earlier in that 2022 season, when Peyton Dolejs, Bailey Sample and Payton Hamm all went yard in the sixth inning of a victory over Central Connecticut State (Feb. 26, 2022).
• The last time the Falcons had three homers in the same inning against a MAC opponent? It happened just over six years ago, on March 23, 2019. On that day, Madi McCoy, Evelyn Loyola and Hamm all hit bombs in the fifth inning of a game at Ohio.
MORE ON THOSE SHUTOUTS...
• Falcon freshmen Morgan Beckham and Sydney Marshall combined to throw 12 shutout innings on Saturday, as BG blanked the Broncos in back-to-back games. That came one week after junior Mackenzie Krafcik threw a complete-game shutout at Northern Illinois (April 5).
(If you're going to take just one bullet point from these notes to share on Twitter/X, Instagram, Snapchat or even Myspace, this might be the one...)
• Falcon pitchers have thrown three shutouts in the last six games, after BGSU had posted three shutouts in the previous 144 contests.
• BGSU's back-to-back shutouts on Saturday were the program's first since April 10-12, 2022, when the Falcons blanked Buffalo and Detroit Mercy, respectively.
• The Falcons posted two shutout wins on the same day for the first time since March 6, 2020, when BG topped Providence and Penn State at the Clearwater Invitational.
• BGSU had not recorded shutouts in both ends of a doubleheader in over 11 years, since downing North Dakota, 3-0 and 8-0, at Meserve Field on April 7, 2014.
• And, the Falcons had not blanked a MAC team in both games of a twinbill in just over 12 years, since posting 3-0 and 2-0 wins over visiting Akron on April 5, 2013.
ADDIE. MARTIN.
• Redshirt freshman Addie Martin has 12 homers in 2025, tying her for second on the BGSU single-season list. She is just three round-trippers shy of the school record of 15, set by Hannah Fulk in 2012.
• Martin also has a team-leading 14 stolen bases this year to date. She is the first player in school history with at least a dozen homers and a dozen steals in the same season.
• In addition to threatening the single-season mark for dingers, she is on pace to break the BGSU record for slugging percentage. Martin currently has a slugging pct. of .746, putting her in a virtual tie for that mark (.746 by Hayley Wiemer in 2007).
• Entering Tuesday's Ohio doubleheader, Martin is ranked in the top 20 on six BGSU single-season lists...
HITTING HER WAY INTO THE RECORD BOOK: ADDIE MARTIN ON THE BGSU SINGLE-SEASON CHARTS
Category Martin's Total/Avg. Ranking The Current Record

Batting Avg. .365 14th .439
Stolen Bases 14 T-18th 53
THE HUNT FOR THE TOP TWENTY...
• In addition to Martin, junior Hannah Hunt is also vying for a spot in the top-20 on the single-season list for batting average. Hunt is hitting a team-leading .368 this season, an average that would put her in the top 10 on that BGSU list.
• Hunt, who hit a team-best .625 (5-for-8) in the Western Michigan series, now has a seven-game hitting streak. She has had at least one hit in 16 of the Falcons' last 17 games.
ABOUT THE FALCONS

• BGSU is 7-9 in MAC games this season after going a combined 5-51 in the previous two years.
• The Falcons began the season with five games at the Spartan Classic, hosted by USC Upstate (Feb. 7-9), and the Orange and Brown participated in the Norman Tournament two weeks later. The Falcons turned some heads on the final day of the latter tourney (Feb. 24), battling then #2 Oklahoma into extra innings before falling, 8-5.
• The Falcons then played six games in Conway, S.C. (Feb. 28-March 3), including five at the Chanticleer Showdown, before wrapping up the pre-conference schedule with four games at Hoosier Classic (March 7-8).
• A total of 10 of the Falcons' losses have come against teams currently ranked 56th or better in the latest RPI rankings.
• Head coach Michelle Gardner and her staff – Greg McQuillin, Tegan Cortelletti and Indya Smith – have 14 returning letterwinners, including four positional starters, from the 2024 club. Additionally, five of the seven pitchers from a season ago are on the '25 roster.
• Four Falcons have started all 40 games this season to date. That group includes junior Hannah Hunt, sophomores Taylor Behrendt and Peyton Steffes and redshirt freshman Addie Martin. Junior Katie Hutter has made 37 starts, while classmate Kendall Mathews and freshman Hanna Massaro each have started 35 times. Sophomore Cameron Kaufman started the first 20 games of the season, then missed the next 14 contests due to injury before returning for the NIU series. She has started the last six contests.

• Martin leads the Falcons in runs scored (39), hits (46, tied with Hunt), homers (12), RBI (32), total bases (94), stolen bases (14) and slugging pct. (.746). Hunt has a team-leading .430 on-base pct.. Behrendt has draw 19 walks and Hutter and Mathews each have walked 18 times.
• A total of eight different Falcons have driven in at least 10 runs, after only three Falcons had double-digit RBI totals last season.
• In the circle, six different players have started at least one game each. Freshman Morgan Beckham and junior Mackenzie Krafcik have made 11 starts apiece, with freshman Sydney Marshall and sophomore Alyvia Roth having started seven and six contests, respectively, this year to date.
• Krafcik (23), Beckham (22) and senior Scarlet Anderson each have made at least 20 appearances. Krafcik has a team-high 76 innings pitched and is 7-7 with a 3.87 ERA. Anderson leads the Falcons in ERA (3.84) and relief appearances (17), while Beckham has a team-low .257 opponent batting average.
• In MAC play, Martin and Hunt are hitting .353 and .333, respectively, while junior Delaney Davis is batting .379 in 29 at-bats. Krafcik has a team-low 2.76 ERA in conference competition to date, while Beckham has a 2.97 ERA vs. league foes.
• A total of 10 positional returnees made at least 10 starts last spring. In the circle, Krafcik made 16 appearances, including 12 starts, and threw 58 2/3 innings in 2024, leading the returning pitchers in all three categories.
THE OPPONENTS / THE SERIES
• Ohio is 26-12 overall, and the Bobcats enter Tuesday's DH with a 9-4 MAC record. Brenna Farmer has a .352 batting average to lead five starters who are hitting .300 or higher. Lauren Yuhas is batting .339 with a team-high 37 runs scored. In the circle, three players have started 10 or more games. Anna Wise leads the 'Cats with a 2.19 ERA, while Mikie Lieving has a 2.31 ERA and Skipp Miller has team-high totals of 11 wins and 74 strikeouts. Last season, head coach Jenna Hall's Bobcats went 31-24 overall and 18-8 in the MAC.
• The Falcons trail Ohio, 65-60, in the all-time series, and the Bobcats have won the last five meetings, including a pair of victories in Athens last season (May 5, 2024). The 'Cats swept all three meetings two years ago when the teams last met at Meserve Field. BGSU's last series win was a 5-3 outcome in the 2022 MAC Tournament (May 12, 2022). The Falcons are 28-25 at home, 22-34 on the road and 10-6 in neutral-site meetings vs. the Bobcats through the years.
