Falcons Fly Past Flashes, 9-7, to Complete Weekend Sweep
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University softball team scored four first-inning runs to take the lead for good on Saturday afternoon (March 22), and the Falcons topped Kent State University, 9-7. With the win, BGSU completed a sweep of the teams' three-game Mid-American Conference weekend series at Meserve Field.
Delaney Davis, who had hits in each of the final two innings of Friday's second win, had three hits and three RBI on Saturday for the Falcons (10-18, 4-2 MAC). The junior was 3-for-4 on the day to pace BGSU's eight-hit attack.
In the circle, freshman Morgan Beckham picked up her first collegiate win with 3 2/3 innings of three-hit relief. Beckham allowed three runs, but all three were unearned, in relief of junior Mackenzie Krafcik. Krafcik saw action in all three games on the weekend.
Carley Penner and Brynn Libler each had two hits for the Golden Flashes (7-22, 0-6 MAC) on Saturday.
After falling behind by four runs early, the Flashes scored two runs in both the third and fourth innings. But, BGSU answered in each case, with a two-run third and a three-run fourth. The Falcons led, 9-4, after four frames, and took that lead into the seventh inning before a KSU rally fell short.
BGSU-KSU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Falcons overcame a surreal total of eight errors in Saturday's win. BGSU jumped on top early, with a four-run first frame. After Katie Hutter walked, Addie Martin singled, and Taylor Behrendt reached on a bunt single to load the bases.
• A ground ball resulted in an out at the plate, but on a Peyton Steffes grounder, Martin beat the throw to the plate, and that throw was off line, allowing Behrendt to score as well. Ava McKee followed with a hit that scored Hannah Hunt, and after Ashley Chevalier walked on four pitches, Delaney Davis smacked a single to center to score Steffes and chase KSU starter Kendal Leitner. Delaney Nagy entered the circle and retired the next two hitters, but the Falcons had a four-run lead.
• KSU cut the deficit in half in the second. Carley Penner reached on a bunt single, and Brynn Libler walked against BGSU starter Mackenzie Krafcik. Savannah Wing reached base on an error, with Penner scoring on the play, although Wing was tagged out after turning toward second base.
• But, the next hitter, Leitner, reached on a throwing error, with Libler scoring on that play, and Delaney Robeson walked after a 13-pitch at-bat. Krafcik, however, got a ground ball off the bat of Katie Jo Moery that led to a force play at third, before Aaralyn.Nogay hit an inning-ending grounder to the BG pitcher.
• BGSU got those runs right back. McKee led off with a single, and Chavalier reaced on an error. Davis followed with a single through the right side, and an error by the KSU right fielder allowed McKee to score. Then, Chevalier came home on a wild pitch to make it a 6-2 game.
• The Flashes, however, scored two more runs in the fourth, on three hits and two BG errors. KSU loaded the bases with one out, on singles by Leilani Johnson and Penner and an infield error. Then, Wing singled, with all of the runners moving up on an error by the Falcons. Morgan Beckham came on and retired the next two KSU batters to escape the jam, but the Flashes were within two runs once again.
• But, in the Falcon fourth, the home side responded once again. Behrendt led off with a walk, and Steffes reached on a one-out fielder's choice, with both Falcons safe as Behrendt beat the throw to second. A McKee ground ball moved those runners up a base, and a Chevalier walk loaded the bases.
• Davis followed with a single up the middle that allowed both Behrendt and Steffes to score. Then, after Kendall Mathews walked, Hutter earned an RBI the hard way, as she was hit by an Ella Johnson pitch to allow Chevalier to score.
• Beckham worked around a two-out error in the fifth, and got out of the sixth inning after allowing a walk and a single. In the seventh, however, the Flashes got two hits and benefited from three Falcon errors to mount a rally.
• Moery singled, and Nogay reached on a fielder's choice. Both runners were safe on an infield error, and an outfield error on the same play allowed Moery to score.
• Then, after a wild pitch, Beckham got the first out of the inning. A passed ball alowed Nogay to score, before a Megan Claerhout foul pop was caught by third baseman Behrendt in foul ground for out number two. Penner reached on another BGSU error, and she came all the way around on a Libler single. But, Beckham got Wing to hit a popup that was grabbed by second baseman Hunt, ending the game.
• The teams combined for 17 hits, all singles, in the game. Davis went 3-for-4 with three RBI for the Falcons, with McKee picking up two hits.
• Behrendt had a single and a walk, while Chevalier walked twice and scored twice.
• Beckham picked up her first collegiate win, allowing three runs – all unearned – and three hits in 3 2/3 innings of relief. Krafcik had allowed two earned runs and six hits in her 3 1/3 innings of work.
• Penner and Libler each had two hits for KSU, with Penner scoring three runs.
