BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Addie Martin homered in each of her first two official at-bats at Meserve Field, sparking the Bowling Green State University softball team to a 6-1 win over Green Bay on Tuesday afternoon (March 18). The Phoenix bounced back for a 3-2 victory in the second game of the non-conference doubleheader.

Martin, a redshirt freshman, was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI in the opening game of the day. She then had a triple and a bunt single in her first two at-bats in game two, finishing with six total hits on the day.

Junior Mackenzie Krafcik picked up the win in the circle in Tuesday's opener, firing the Falcons' first complete game of the season. She allowed just one run and five hits.

In addition to Martin's two-hit game in the nightcap, the Falcons (7-18) got a solo homer from sophomore Peyton Steffes. That dinger gave BG an early lead in the second inning, but the Phoenix (7-13) rallied for three sixth-inning runs, and a seventh-inning rally by the hosts fell just short.

Sophomore Taylor Behrendt had two hits and two RBI in the opener, and walked twice in game two. Junior Ashley Chevalier had a double in game one and a pair of walks in the nightcap.

NOTE OF THE DAY

• Martin's total of nine dingers ties her for 11th on the BGSU single-season list. The school record is 15 homers, by Hannah Fulk in 2012.

BGSU-GREEN BAY GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• BGSU starter Mackenzie Krafcik retired the Phoenix in order in the first inning, needing just seven pitches to do so, and two batters later, the Falcons had the lead.
Addie Martin hit a line drive to left-center off of Green Bay starter Ava Schill, and the ball just kept going. It went over the fence on a line, giving the Falcons an early 1-0 lead.
• BGSU had three additional baserunners in the inning, as Taylor Behrendt singled, Hannah Hunt reached on an error and Peyton Steffes had a two-out base hit to left. But, on the latter play, an out at the plate ended the inning.
• Green Bay tied it up in the top of the second. Paige Hanson doubled with one out, and two batters later, Evelyn Wolfgram's single scored Hanson from third.
• After homering in her first official at-bat at Meserve Field, Martin homered in her second at-bat as well. She led off the third with a drive to left, with the ball landing on top of the BGSU bullpen. The Falcons had a 2-1 lead.
• Several batters later, Ashley Chevalier hit a drive over the head of centerfielder Bella Herman for a two-out double, but she was stranded at second.
• In the Falcon fourth, Hanna Massaro reached on an infield single with one out, and advanced to second on a Kendal Mathews walk. A fielder's choice produced the second out, but Martin came through with a single to left, scoring Massaro. Then, on the very next pitch, Behrendt singled up the middle to plate Katie Hutter and give the Falcons a 4-1 lead.
• Krafcik allowed a single in the fourth and a walk in the fifth, before setting down the Phoenix in order in the sixth. Then, the BG offense went to work again.
• Mathews was hit by a pitch and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hutter. Martin's fourth hit of the game put runners at the corners, and Martin then stole second.
• Behrendt followed with a hard-hit ball that only stayed in the infield due to a nifty defensive play by second baseman Kendal Herschbach. Herschbach got an out at first, but Mathews scored on the play. Then, just two pitches later, Hunt's sharp single to center allowed Martin to score the Falcons' sixth run.
• Schill walked to begin the seventh, and after a fly ball produced the first out, a wayward throw allowed pinch-runner Alyssa DeMaio to advance to third. A walk put runners at the corners, but on the next pitch, Krafcik got Aidyn Messman to hit a popup that shortstop Martin caught near the second-base bag. Then, Krafcik induced pinch-hitter Emma Krueger to hit a game-ending ground ball to Behrendt at third.
• Martin had the first four-hit game of her career, scoring three runs while driving in three runs. Behrendt was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI, and Hunt drove in a run as well.
• In the circle, Krafcik fired the first complete game by a BG pitcher this season, allowing just one run and five hits. She walked three batters and struck out one in improving to 3-3 on the season.

BGSU-GREEN BAY GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• After Kendal Herschbach reached on an error to begin the game, shortstop Addie Martin ranged to her left to grab a line drive by Bella Herman near the second-base bag, firing to first to double up Herschbach.
• The Falcons threatened in the bottom of the inning. Martin picked up her fifth hit in as many plate appearances with a one-out triple down the right-field line. Taylor Behrendt walked, but Green Bay pitcher Genesis Eggart then struck out the next two batters to keep the game scoreless.
• BGSU starter Scarlet Anderson worked a 1-2-3 second inning, and BG took the lead in the bottom of the frame as Peyton Steffes led off the inning with a homer to right. For the sophomore, it was her second round-tripper of the season.
• Anderson worked around a two-out single by Herschbach in the third, but Eggart got out of another first-and-third jam in the bottom of the inning. Martin, 5-for-5 on the day entering the inning, made it 6-for-6. This time, she laid down a bunt that spun toward the first-base side and rolled to a stop just inside the chalk. Behrendt bunted as well, and Martin advanced all the way to third on the sacrifice.
• But, Eggart got a popup to first for the second out, and after Ashley Chevalier drew a four-pitch walk, a strikeout ended the inning.
• Freshman Ava McKee was hit by a pitch in the Falcon fourth, and advanced to second on classmate Hanna Massaro's sac bunt, but back-to-back strikeouts quelled that threat.
• Anderson, who had retired the Phoenix in order in the fourth, worked around a one-out walk in the fifth.
• Then, in the bottom of the inning, Behrendt drew a four-pitch walk with one down, and Chevalier's two-out free pass put a pair of runners aboard. Those runners moved up to second and third, respectively, on a wild pitch by Eggart, but a drive by Steffes was caught by centerfielder Herman in left-center.
• After getting just one hit in the first five innings, the Phoenix rose in the sixth. With one out, Herman doubled to center. Anderson got Sara Ebner, Green Bay's top hitter entering the day, to pop up for the second out, but Jenna Redders followed with a slow roller to the left side for a single.
• Paige Hanson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and pinch-hitter Ava Schill singled to right to score two runs and give her team the lead. Then, a Gianna Camacho single plated another run. Freshman Morgan Beckham entered the circle and struck out Sidney LaMotte to end the inning.
• BGSU went in order in the sixth, and Emma Krueger singled to begin the seventh. A walk to Herschbach put two on with none out, and Herman's sac bunt moved the runners over. But, Beckham struck out Ebner, then got Redders to hit a popup that third baseman Behrendt grabbed in foul territory for the third out.
Katie Hutter walked to begin the BG seventh, and a wild pitch moved pinch-runner Reghan Stephany to second. After back-to-back strikeouts, the Falcons were down to their last out, but Hannah Hunt single to right to score Stephany. But, Eggart got a foul pop to the right side, ending the game.
• Martin was 2-for-4 in game two, while Steffes homered and Chevalier and Behrendt each walked twice.
• Six different players had one hit apiece for Green Bay in game two.
• In the circle, Anderson allowed three runs and five hits before leaving with two outs in the sixth. Beckham got the final four outs, allowing one hit and walking one while striking out two.
• Eggart picked up the victory for the Phoenix, giving up two runs and four hits. She walked six, but struck out 11.
