Colonials Capture Series Opener, 6-0
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Robert Morris University broke a scoreless tie with back-to-back three-run innings, and the Colonials went on to a 6-0 win over the Bowling Green State University softball team Friday (May 2) at Meserve Field.
Falcon junior Mackenzie Krafcik no-hit the Colonials (27-15) for the first three innings, but RMU got a two-out RBI single in the fourth, then scored two more runs after a throwing error.
The visitors then doubled the lead in the fifth, when cleanup hitter Mary Brant's fly ball down the right-field line carried over the fence for a two-out, three-run homer.
That was more than enough support for RMU starting pitcher Madison DeVault, who allowed three hits, striking out 10 batters in her complete-game win.
Juniors Hannah Hunt and Cameron Kaufman each had a double for the Falcons (15-36).
BGSU-RMU – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Mackenzie Krafcik hit Anna Resnik with a pitch with one out in the top of the first inning, but that was the only baserunner the BG junior would allow in the first three frames. Aided by a fantastic diving catch by Peyton Steffes in right-center field, Krafcik retired the final two batters of the first inning and would set down eight consecutive hitters.
• Hannah Hunt led off the BGSU half of the first inning by lining a ball down the right-field line for a double. She advanced to third on a ground ball back to pitcher Madison DeVault, but was stranded there as DeVault struck out the next two Falcons.
• While Krafcik set down eight-straight Colonials after that first-inning HBP, DeVault retired 11 Falcons in a row following the Hunt double.
• RMU took the lead in the fourth, as Resnik led off the inning with a single to center. Second baseman Hunt grabbed a liner off the bat of Courtney Poulich for the first out, before Mary Brant drew a walk.
• The next hitter, Alaina Koutsogiani, lined a ball to the left side, but it was grabbed by third baseman Addie Martin for the second out. But, Jess Matheny followed with a run-scoring single to right, putting the Colonials on the board.
• Then, the inning continued as Sequoia Dunlap reached on a throwing error, with a run scoring on the play, and the Colonials would add another unearned run in the inning.
• Cameron Kaufman lined a DeVault pitch to the gap in right-center for a two-out double in the fourth, and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but DeVault got an inning-ending strikeout.
• In the fifth, Kaylyn Hopf and Resnik had back-to-back singles with one out. Krafcik got Poulich to hit a popup that was caught by Hunt, but Brent hit a ball in the air to right. As Steffes headed back toward the fence, the ball just kept carrying, and it landed on top of the RMU bullpen for a three-run homer.
• Steffes singled to begin the Falcon fifth, but a hard-hit ball resulted in a double play that quelled that threat.
• Alyvia Roth entered the circle for the Orange and Brown to begin the sixth. She hit a batter before pinch-hitter Jaimee Hardy singled to put two runners aboard with one out. But, Roth got Logan Black to hit a ground ball back to the circle, firing to first as the runners advanced.
• The next hitter, Hopf, also hit a grounder back toward the circle. Roth fielded the ball and looked the runner, Dunlap, back to third. But, Hardy had taken off for third, and two RMU runners were near the base as Roth ran toward the third-base line. She fired the ball to shortstop Kaufman, who put the tag on Dunlap for the third out.
• Roth also pitched a scoreless seventh, but DeVault kept BG off the board in the final two innings, allowing only a sixth-inning walk to Martin during that time.
• DeVault picked up the complete-game victory, allowing just three hits. She walked one batter and struck out 10.
• Krafcik allowed five hits and four earned runs in five innings, while Roth surrendered two hits in two scoreless frames of relief.
• Resnik and Brant each were 2-of-3 to pace RMU's seven-hit attack.
