Rockets Rally to Capture Saturday Doubleheader
TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo rallied late in each game to capture a Saturday (April 26) doubleheader against the Bowling Green State University softball team in Mid-American Conference action at Scott Park. The Rockets captured a 6-5 win in 10 innings in the opener, before posting a 10-5 victory in game two.
At the plate, Hannah Hunt was 5-for-9 on the afternoon for the Falcons (15-33, 7-17 MAC, with three hits in the opener and two more in the nightcap. Cameron Kaufman was a perfect 4-for-4 in the opener, while Taylor Behrendt went 3-for-4 in the second game.
The Rockets (17-26, 10-12 MAC) scored a seventh-inning run to tie the first game, before Samantha Bolding led off the bottom of the 10th with a homer, her second of the game.
In game two, UT exploded for eight runs in the sixth inning to erase a three-run deficit.
BGSU-TOLEDO GAME ONE– HOW IT HAPPENED
• Both teams went in order in the first inning, with BGSU starter Mackenzie Krafcik needing just four pitches to retire three Rockets.
• Cameron Kaufman led off the second inning by bunting for a hit, and Ava McKee had a two-out single through the left side of the UT infield, but the Falcons could not break on top.
• Samantha Bolding put the hosts on top, however, in the bottom of the inning. With a strong wind blowing to right field, Bolding put a ball in the air to right for a one-out solo homer.
• Addie Martin singled up the middle with two down in the third, but UT starting pitcher Kylee Graham got the third out. In the bottom of the inning, Eli Enriquez had a one-out hit, but a perfect throw by catcher McKee resulted in Enriquez being caught stealing for just the fourth time in 21 tries this season. Krafcik faced the minimum three batters in the third.
• BGSU used 'small ball' to put together a big inning in the fourth. Hannah Hunt led off with a single, and Kaufman reached on her second bunt single of the game. Peyton Steffes moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt, and Kendall Mathews followed with a single to left that scored Hunt.
• Then, after Mathews stole second, McKee's sac bunt resulted in another run when Kaufman beat the UT throw to the plate. With runners at the corners, McKee and Mathews executed a double steal to plate another run, and one batter later, Katie Hutter laced a ball to right to score McKee with the inning's fourth run.
• The Rockets struck right back. Audrey Miller doubled with one out, then stole third and scored when the throw trickled away. Bolding was hit by a pitch, and came all the way around to score when a Maris Barbato single got past a BG outfielder.
• UT made a pitching change to begin the fifth inning, but Martin greeted reliever Mady Yackee by drawing a walk, and Hunt ripped a ball down the left-field line for a double. Sophia Knight entered the circle for the Rockets, but Kaufman's hard-hit ball to short resulted in her third hit of the game, as Martin crossed the plate.
• Then, Steffes drew a walk to load the bases, but Knight struck out the next two hitters, then got a foul pop for the third out, and the hosts escaped the inning having allowed just one run.
• Alexis Shepherd and Enriquez each singled to begin the Rocket fifth. BG got a force at third for the first out. Kendra Vander Lugt followed with a drive to the base of the wall in left, but the runner at second held to make sure the ball would not be caught, and it wound up as a long single that loaded the bases.
• Miller lofted a ball to left for a sac fly, but on the play, Sidney Griffith was out attempting to tag up and take third.
• Bolding led off the UT sixth by reaching on a throwing error, advancing to second on the play. Barbato drove a ball to the wall in left, but Mathews ran it down to make the catch. Madison McKay's fly ball to center was caught for the second out, with Bolding tagging up and advancing to third. And, Krafcik got Jenna Bloomfield to hit a blooper that was grabbed by second baseman Hunt for the third out.
• A flare off the bat of Enriquez landed just inside the left-field line for a one-out single in the seventh. Griffith followed with a single up the middle, and Morgan Beckham entered the circle for the Falcons. Vander Lugt worked a walk to load the bases, and Miller's opposite-field blooper landed in fair territory just past first base. The tying run scored, but second baseman Hunt grabbed the spinning ball and threw home in plenty of time for McKee to tag Griffith for the second out. After a somewhat-intentional walk to Bolding, Beckham got Barbato to hit a ground ball to the left side for a force at third, and the teams headed to extra innings.
• Taylor Behrendt drew a two-out walk in the eighth, and Martin was hit by a Knight pitch, but the UT hurler retired the next hitter on a ground ball to short.
• McKay led off the UT eighth with a single to left, and pinch-hitter Eliza Maloney laid down a bunt on the next pitch. Third baseman Martin, however, fielded the ball and fired to second in time to get the lead runner. Then, shortstop Kaufman grabbed Shepherd's grounder up the middle, stepped on second and fired to first for a double play that sent the game to the ninth.
• Kaufman led off that ninth inning with a single, her fourth hit of the game. With one out, Kaufman took off for second, but was caught in a rundown. She advanced to second safely, however, when a throw was dropped. But, a strikeout and a fly ball to left ended the inning.
• Beckham issued a one-out walk in the bottom of the inning, but then got popups to Hunt on back-to-back pitches.
• But, Bolding led off the bottom of the tenth with a solo homer to left, giving UT the walk-off win.
BGSU-TOLEDO GAME TWO– HOW IT HAPPENED
• Hunt led off with a line drive off the glove of UT starting pitcher Knight, with the ball continuing up the middle for a hit. With one out, Behrendt also hit a ball back through the circle. Knight knocked it down, but Behrendt beat her throw to first with a headfirst slide.
• Kaufman drew a walk to load the bases. Knight induced a foul pop for the second out, but Mathews walked to allow Hunt to trot home with the game's first run. Then, on the next pitch, Steffes lofted a ball to shallow right-center for a two-run single and a three-run BGSU lead.
• Enriquez led off the bottom of the inning with an infield hit, then stole second, tagged and took third on a fly ball, and scored on a Vander Lugt single.
• Delaney Davis led off the second inning with a bunt single, and advanced to third when Hunt hit a ball to the base of the wall in left for a double. Martin's fly ball was caught in right center, but Davis tagged and beat the throw to the plate, giving BG a 4-1 lead on the sac fly.
• BG starter Sydney Marshall got three consecutive ground-ball outs in the home half of the second.
• With one down in the third, Mathews walked before Steffes picked up her second hit in as many trips, a single to left. A two-out wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, and a ball-four pitch to Davis was high and wide, allowing Mathews to score standing up.
• Marshall needed just three pitches to get three outs in the bottom of the third.
• In the fourth, however, the Rockets got a run back. Bolding drew a two-out walk, ending a streak of 10 consecutive batters retired by Marshall. Then, she went to third on a base hit by Barbato, and scored on a bloop single by McKay.
• The Rockets looked to replicate that two-out magic in the fifth, as Griffith reached on a grounder to short, and Vander Lugt walked. But, Marshall got Miller to hit a popup that was caught by Hunt on the grass behind first base.
• Bolding led off the bottom of the sixth with a double, and Barbato's liner up the middle was knocked down by Marshall, but the runners were safe at the corners. A key play in the game came when the next hitter, McKay, grounded a ball up the middle. Kaufman threw to Hunt, who relayed to Behrendt at first, but both runners were ruled safe, and Bolding crossed the plate on the play.
• Then, with one out, Shepherd's chopper bounced over Marshall and into center for an RBI single that made it a 5-4 game. Enriquez singled to load the bases, and Griffith's single to right plated two teammates to give the Rockets a 6-5 lead. Vander Lugt followed with a two-run single, and she scored on Miller's base hit.
