Fifth Frame Fateful for Falcons

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Bowling Green State University softball team held the University of Akron off the scoreboard for all but one inning on Sunday morning (Feb. 9), but that one inning proved fateful for the Falcons. The Zips scored seven fifth-inning runs to post a 7-2 victory in final-day action at Spartan Classic.

Sophomore Taylor Behrendt went 2-for-3 for the Falcons (2-3), while fellow soph Cameron Kaufman was 1-for-3 with a walk and a run. Redshirt freshman Addie Martin also had a hit and scored a run.

The Falcons had taken the lead with a pair of fourth-inning runs at Cyrill Stadium, as Martin and Kaufman each doubled before coming around to score. But, the Zips (4-1), held to just one hit over the first four innings, saw seven-straight batters reach base before an out was recorded in the fifth, and UA starting pitcher Madie Jamrog was able to shut down the Falcons' offense over the final two frames.

BGSU-AKRON – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Both teams went in order in the first, as pitchers Madie Jamrog and Morgan Beckham each got off to successful Sunday starts. Taylor Behrendt became the first player for either team to reach base with a one-out single in the second, but she was stranded there.
• Akron's Lily Sullivan – hitting .692 through the Zips' first four games of the season – was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the second, but was erased via a double play, and Beckham then got Sydney Selker looking to end the inning.
• Beckham issued a two-out walk to Delaney Jenkinson in the third, but got leadoff hitter Brooke Sivek to hit an inning-ending ground ball to Addie Martin at third base.
• Martin then led off the fourth inning with a double to center, and Hannah Hunt's ground ball resulted in an error that put runners at the corners. Hunt was out on a double-steal attempt, but Martin crossed the plate with the game's first run.
Cameron Kaufman followed with a double to left, and BG again had runners at the corners after Behrendt reached on an infield single. Katie Hutter's sacrifice fly to left allowed Kaufman to tag and score, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
• Akron's first hit of the game came when Meagan Lee reached on a bunt single to begin the bottom of the fourth. But, Lee was erased on a double-play ball, and Beckham then got Sullivan to ground out to third, ending the inning.
• The Zips drew back-to-back walks to begin the home half of the fifth, though, and a Katie Cantrell single loaded the bases before an Alexis Campbell single plated a pair of teammates and tied the game.
• A walk reloaded the bases for UA, and pinch-hitter Andrea Day greeted BG reliever Madi Young with an infield single that gave the Zips the lead. Lee's single and an error allowed two more runs to score.
• UA added runs on a wild pitch and a bases-loaded walk, taking a 7-2 lead with one out. Mackenzie Krafcik entered the game and got a popup to Hunt at second base, followed by an inning-ending strikeout.
• Krafcik retired all five hitters she faced in the game, setting down the Zips in order in the sixth.

UP NEXT
• The Falcons are idle next weekend, before participating in the Norman Tournament, hosted by four-time defending national champion Oklahoma (Feb. 21-23). BGSU is scheduled to play two games apiece against Tulsa and Wichita State, along with one game against the host Sooners.
