Hunt & Martin Hit Back-to-Back Blasts, But Miami Captures Midweek MAC DH at Meserve
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Hannah Hunt and Addie Martin hit back-to-back homers, but the Bowling Green State University softball team dropped a doubleheader against Miami University on Wednesday afternoon (April 30). The RedHawks picked up Mid-American Conference wins by scores of 10-4 and 12-0 at Meserve Field.
Martin's homer was her 13th of the season, the second-highest single-season total in program history.
The back-to-back dingers gave the Falcons (15-35, 7-19 MAC) a 3-1 third-inning lead in the opener, but the RedHawks (28-23, 17-7 MAC) retook the lead with a five-run fourth frame.
Shelby Kunkel homered twice in the opening game for the visitors. In the nightcap, Miami scored in each of the first four innings, while starting pitcher Lea Chevrier kept the Falcons off the scoreboard in the five-inning win.
Delaney Davis was 3-for-4 with a walk and a run on the afternoon. Martin and Davis each had two-hit games in the opener, with Martin and Hunt each driving in a pair of runs in that contest.
BGSU-MIAMI GAME ONE – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The opening game featured only one baserunner in the first two innings. BGSU starter Mackenzie Krafcik worked around a one-out double by Kaylee Oh in the first inning, retiring seven-straight batters after that hit. Meanwhile, MU starter Madilyn Reeves worked a pair of 1-2-3 innings and would begin the game by setting down the first eight Falcons she faced.
• The RedHawks took the lead in the third inning. Shelby Kunkel ended Krafcik's aforementioned streak with a solo homer to left. Oh followed with a bloop single, but Krafcik got Chloe Parks to hit a fly ball to left for the third out.
• After Reeves got two outs to begin the BG half of the third inning, Delaney Davis laid down a perfect bunt, beating it out for a single. Then, on the very next pitch, Hannah Hunt hit a two-run homer to left, giving the Orange and Brown a 2-1 lead. The round-tripper was Hunt's third of the year.
• And, BGSU went back to back as the next hitter, Addie Martin, also deposited a Reeves pitch beyond the wall in left. Martin's 13th clout of the season gave the Falcons a 3-1 advantage.
• Center fielder Hanna Massaro made a nice running catch of a McKenna Campbell drive to left-center to begin the fourth, but after Ella Carter was hit by a pitch, a BG throwing error put runners at the corners for the RedHawks. Holly Merritt singled up the middle to plate one run, and after a successful double steal tied the game, a ground ball by Erin Pinter plated the go-ahead run.
• Danitza Hernandez singled, and Kunktl followed with her second homer in as many at-bats, giving the RedHawks a 6-3 lead.
• BGSU got a run back in the fifth. Ava McKee led off by driving a Reeves pitch off the wall in left for a double. Davis drew a one-out, four-pitch walk, and Martin's two-out single enabled pinch-runner Reghan Stephany to round third and slide home safely.
• But, the RedHawks answered with a sixth-inning run. Pinter led off with a single, despite a great diving stop by third baseman Martin that kept it from being at least a double. Kunkel walked with one down, and a walk to Oh loaded the bases.
• Scarlet Anderson entered the circle and got Parks to hit a fly ball to left that was caught by Kendall Mathews, but Pinter was able to tag and score from third.
• Cameron Kaufman led off the BGSU sixth with a hard-hit ball to left for a single, and the sophomore continued on to second when the MU outfielder overran the ball. But, Reeves struck out the next batter, then got a ground ball to the left side, with Kaufman forced to hold. McKee drew a walk, but another strikeout ended the inning.
• And, Miami tacked on three runs in the seventh. After a one-out single by Merritt, the second hit-by-pitch of the inning loaded the bases, and Hernandez drew a run-scoring walk Krafcik returned to the game and struck out Kunkel for the second time, but Oh's base hit scored a pair of teammates.
• In the home half of the seventh, Davis sigled up the middle, and she got as far as second, but was stranded there.
• As mentioned, Hunt and Martin each had two RBI, with Martin going 2-for-4 in the game. Davis was 2-for-2 with a walk and a run.
• Oh was 3-for-4 for the visitors, while Kunkel had the two homers and three RBI. Reeves earned the complete-game win in the circle, allowing four runs and seven hits. She walked two and struck out 10.
• Five of Miami's 10 runs were unearned.
BGSU-MIAMI GAME TWO – HOW IT HAPPENED
• Miami got on the board quickly in the second game. Kunkel led off the contest with a walk, stole second, and scored on a bloop double by Oh. Oh moved to third on a grounder, then scored on Campbell's single for a 2-0 lead.
• BG got back-to-back hits by Taylor Behrendt and Kaufman in the home half of the inning, but MU hurler Lea Chevrier got an inning-ending strikeout.
• The second inning saw Miami score four times. Pinter doubled, and Hernandez and Kunkel each singled. Then, Oh's double scored two teammates and prompted a pitching change. Campbell's two-out hit capped the second-inning scoring.
• BG again put two players on base, as Massaro and Davis each picked up two-out hits, but a fly ball to right ended the threat.
• A Jenna Golemibiewski single began the third inning, and with runners at the corners with two outs, a double steal enabled the RedHawks to add to the lead.
• The fourth inning saw Campbell homer after Parks had reached base, and after Carter doubled, Golembiewski followed with a two-run homer of her own. An error and a single completed the game's scoring.
• The Falcons put at least one runner on base in every inning, as Martin was hit by a pitch in the third, Peyton Steffes walked in the fourth and Hunt drew a base on balls in the fifth, but BG could not spoil Chevrier's shutout.
• Campbell was 4-for-4 with four RBI in the nightcap, while both Golembiewski and Oh had two hits and drove in multiple runs.
