BGSU Drops a Pair of Sunday Contests at Chanticleer Showdown

The Bowling Green State University softball team dropped a pair of games at the Chanticleer Showdown on Sunday (March 2). The Falcons

CONWAY, S.C. – The Bowling Green State University softball team dropped a pair of games at the Chanticleer Showdown on Sunday (March 2). The Falcons fell, 10-2, to the University of Wisconsin, before dropping a 9-1 decision against the host school, Coastal Carolina University, at St. John Stadium.

The opening game saw the Badgers (13-7) break open a one-run game with a five-run fifth inning. In the nightcap, Nicolette Picone and Georgia Hood combined on a one-hitter for the Chanticleers (15-4).

Hannah Hunt had three hits on the day for the Falcons (3-12), increasing her batting average to a team-best .326. Addie Martin had two hits, including a home run, in the UW game, and she scored two of the team's three runs on Sunday.

NOTE OF THE DAY
Addie Martin's homer in the Wisconsin game matched BGSU's team total for all of last season. Martin's round-tripper was the Falcons' eighth in the first 14 games of the year. Last season, BGSU homered eight times in 44 games.

ALSO NOTEWORTHY
Addie Martin leads the team in runs scored, with 14 through 15 games. No player scored more than 15 runs during all of the 2024 season.

BGSU-WISCONSIN – HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Badgers threatened, but did not score, in the top of the first. Alivia Bark led off the game with a single, and moved up on a sacrifice bunt. BGSU starter Scarlet Anderson got Hilary Blomberg to ground out, but on an infield single by Kendra Lewis, Bark was out attempting to score.
• The Falcons wasted little time in taking the lead, as Addie Martin homered off of UW starter Gabi Salo with one out in the bottom of the first. Hannah Hunt followed with a double, and Cameron Kaufman singled to center, but Salo bounced back to strike out the next two Falcons and avoid further damage.
• In the Badger second, a walk, a sac bunt and an infield single put runners at the corners with one out, before a sac fly by Ellie Hubbard scored pinch-runner Kate Linkletter to tie the game. Anderson struck out Rylie Crane to end the inning.
• Wisconsin took the lead in the third, as Molly Schlosser tripled with one out, then scored on a Blomberg bunt.
• The fourth frame saw the Badgers put runners on second and third after a single, stolen base, a fielder's-choice grounder and a sac bunt. Anderson induced Emily Bojan to hit a grounder back to the circle, and threw her out with the runners forced to hold. Then, she got Bark – who was hitting .426 on the season entering the game – to ground out to Kaufman at short.
• Salo had retired eight Falcons in a row, but Kaufman began the Falcon fourth by reaching on an infield error, and she advanced to third on Taylor Behrendt's single. But, Salo retired the next three Falcons on a strikeout, popup to third and fly ball to center.
• Wisconsin broke the game open in the fifth. Blomberg doubled with one out, and one out later, Emmy Wells homered to give UW a 4-1 lead. The Badgers added three unearned runs in the inning. Danielle Lucey singled against BGSU reliever Mackenzie Krafcik, and she stole second before scoring on an infield error. Then, Brooke Kuffel's pinch-hit single plated another run, and a Hannah Conger double made it a 7-1 game.
• In the bottom of the inning, BGSU got two-out singles from Martin and Hunt, but UW reliever Shelby Jacobson retired the next batter to quell the threat.
• Back-to-back singles began the Badger sixth, and Blomberg followed with a homer to right-center.
• In the BG half of the sixth, Ashley Chevalier was hit by a Jordan Felci pitch with one out, and after a force play at second produced the second out, Hanna Massaro doubled to left center, plating Peyton Steffes. But, Felci struck out the next Falcon to close out the win for the Badgers.
• Lucey was 3-for-3 to pace Wisconsin's 14-hit attack, while Bark, Blomberg and Schlosser each had two-hit games.
• For the Falcons, both Hunt and Martin went 2-for-3 vs. the Badgers.

BGSU-CCU – HOW IT HAPPENED
Addie Martin was hit by a pitch with one out, and Hunt's opposite-field single sent Martin to third. Then, on a double steal, Martin scored the game's first run.
• BGSU starter Alyvia Roth began the game by getting a pair of popups to Cameron Kaufman at short, but the Chanticleers mounted a rally. Delaney Keith singled, and Georgia Hood followed with a base hit, as it appeared that her fly ball was lost in the sun by a BG fielder. Keirstin Roose followed with a single to load the bases, and a pair of walks each plated a run.
• The Chants added to the lead in the second. Brie Normandin led off with a single, took second on a sac bunt and scored on Libby Pippin's single. A walk put a pair of runners aboard, but Martin fielded Hood's grounder at third, stepped on the bag and fired to first baseman Taylor Behrendt for an inning-ending double play.
• Roose led off the CCU third inning with a homer to center, beginning an inning that saw the Chanticleers score six times. CCU benefited from five walks in the inning, three of which came with the bases loaded. For the second-straight frame, a 5-5-3 double play ended the inning, but the hosts had a 9-1 lead.
Scarlet Anderson, the Falcons' fourth pitcher of the game, worked a perfect fourth inning, striking out both Hope McDonald and Stephanie Basso before getting Normandin to ground out to third.
• Meanwhile, Nicolette Picone retired the final 11 Falcons she faced after Hunt's first-inning single. Hood replaced her in the circle to begin the fifth, and set down the Orange and Brown in order.

• The Falcons return to St. John Stadium for one more game, taking on Coastal Carolina on Monday evening (March 3). That game begins at 6:00 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
