Gardner Rounds Out Falcon Coaching Staff
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Bowling Green State University head softball coach Michelle Gardner has announced the additions of Greg McQuillin, Tegan Cortelletti and Indya Smith to her staff. All three assistant coaches have already begun their duties with the Falcons.
"I couldn't be more excited to complete my staff with the additions of Greg, Tegan and Indya," said Gardner. "These three bring passion and excitement for the game, and they each bring different experiences and backgrounds, which will have an immediate impact on our program.
"They will work tirelessly to help develop and grow a winning culture here at BGSU."
McQuillin joins the Falcons after spending the last six years at the University of Arizona. He joined the softball program at his alma mater in September of 2018 as a student manager, and was named a graduate assistant in 2022.
During his time with the powerhouse program, he helped the Wildcats make three College World Series appearances in his six years, with UA advancing as far as the Super Regionals on four occasions.
He began his tenure serving as a bullpen catcher, and transitioned to working with both the offense and the defense. In 2023, his first season as the team's GA, McQuillin was the team's first-base coach while assisting in offense, defense and pitch calling.
McQuillin's first three years at UA saw head coach Mike Candrea's team post an overall record of 111-32.
His sister, Taylor McQuillin, was a pitcher for the Wildcats, and now pitches professionally with Athletes Unlimited in addition to being an assistant coach at Southern Utah University.
Greg McQuillin received a Bachelor of Arts in Communications Studies from Arizona in May of 2022, and earned a Master of Science degree in Business Administration in June of 2024.
"I am thrilled for the opportunity to contribute to Bowling Green softball," said McQuillin. "I am excited to join a program with such an amazing leader and group of staff looking to build something special.
"I look forward to getting to work with the student athletes, athletic department, and the community to help build BGSU softball into something great both on and off the field. The future of BGSU softball is bright, and I cant wait to hop on this journey with everyone at BGSU!"
Cortelletti enjoyed a stellar playing career at Ohio State, where she was a five-time OSU Scholar-Athlete. She played in a total of 180 career games, making 118 starts for the Buckeyes, and had career totals of 95 runs and 130 hits.
Cortelletti had a career on-base percentage of .451.
A three-time member of the Academic All-Big Ten Conference Team, Cortelletti twice was named an NFCA All-American Scholar-Athlete.
After seeing action in 15 games as a freshman, Cortelletti played in a total of 92 of the Buckeyes' 96 games over the next two seasons. She was a perfect 18-for-18 in stolen bases in her sophomore year.
She hit .326 as a senior in 2023, then had the finest season of her career in '24. Cortelletti started 47 games and led the team in hitting with a .394 batting average. That average ranked her fifth in the Big Ten and also placed her 11th on the OSU single-season list. She was named to the NFCA All-Midwest Region Second Team in her final campaign.
Cortelletti, a native of Hilliard, Ohio, earned her undergraduate degree in criminology and criminal justice from Ohio State in 2023, before earning a a master's degree in sport coaching from OSU in May of 2024.
"I am honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the Bowling Green softball staff," said Cortelletti. "Bowling Green is a highly respectable program, and I am excited to take it to the next level.
"I am eager to bring my experience and knowledge of the game to these young athletes and help lead them into this upcoming season."
Smith, a native of Petaluma, Calif., played the 2023 and '24 seasons at Coastal Carolina, where her coaches included Michelle Gardner. During those two seasons, the Chanticleers posted at least 30 wins each year and went 70-41 overall.
Smith joined the CCU program after spending the previous three years at Saint Mary's (Calif.). She started 21 games as a freshman for the Gaels in 2020, then was named to the All-West Coast Conference Team in each of the next two seasons.
Smith hit .330 in 2021, leading the roster in extra-base hits and total bases en route to All-WCC First-Team honors. The following season saw her hit .267, including a .316 batting average in WCC play, as she was named to the all-conference second team.
She transferred to Coastal Carolina and began the 2023 season with a 16-game on-base streak for the Chanticleers. Smith batted .271 on the season and had 26 runs scored and 27 runs batted in.
In the spring of 2024, Smith started 29 games and was hitting .338 with a .649 slugging percentage – leading the team in both categories – before suffering a season-ending injury in late March. One of the 29 games in which Smith saw action was a win over visiting Bowling Green in February, when she drew two walks and scored a pair of runs.
Smith earned a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies with an emphasis in sports communications from Coastal Carolina in 2023. She received a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from CCU in 2024.
"I'm so excited for the opportunity to be a part of the staff at BGSU," said Smith. "I'm looking forward to getting the opportunity to share my knowledge and experiences with the current student-athletes, and to be a part of this team and athletic department.
"I'm so grateful for this opportunity and beyond excited to get started!"
Gardner was named head coach of the Falcons in June of 2024, returning to the school where her coaching career began in 1992.
Gardner and the staff are joined by a 2024-25 roster that is slated to have 16 returning student-athletes along with eight newcomers.
