Meet Preview: Managing the Moment Paramount as Track & Field Chases History at MAC Outdoor Championships
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Perhaps the biggest moment in recent BGSU track & field history lies ahead.
It is one that will etch this year's version of the program into Falcon athletics lore – winning a MAC Outdoor title for the first time since 1981, coupling it with their conference indoor championship in March.
While the task may seem monumental given the Championships' three-day format with more events than indoor in expectedly hot and humid Athens, Ohio weather, the meet offers a chance to blend the mental and physical fortitude that are key ingredients for a title.
It is a recipe that the Falcons are more than capable of making themselves.
"We sat down in the summer as a staff and talked about the possibilities for the upcoming season," head coach Lou Snelling said. "We initially focused on one step at a time – cross country, then indoor, then outdoor, and we thought we'd be strong. It's a cool situation to be in."
With their first MAC indoor title since 1999 under their belts, the Falcons have built up experience to handle the pressure of replicating their performances in the outdoor edition of the Championships.
"We've talked a lot about doing your job as well as physical and mental management of the moment," Snelling said. "There have been a lot of reflective moments, and I think we're in a good place."
The Falcons are expected to be strong in the throws, led by Trista Fintel – who earned first-team All-MAC honors during the indoor season. Coming into the meet, the graduate student transfer from the University of Findlay has the best mark in the MAC in both the hammer throw (63.48m) and shot put (16.08m).
BGSU has won the hammer throw in four of the last five conference meets.
Lane Anderson (shot put), Sierra Brinson (discus) and Kami Baker (hammer) are also looking to score points in their respective throwing events.
Mid-distance is also a strength for the Falcons. The freshmen duo of Rachael Hoover and Reese Reaman, each first-team All-MAC honorees during the indoor season, have top eight times in the conference in the 800m.
Kylee Cubbison, who has broken five program records this indoor/outdoor season, is expected to compete for a 1,500m title as she comes in with the second-best time in the event in the MAC.
Cubbison is also hoping to score in the 5,000m as well as distance standouts Regina Rose and Rachael Withrow in the 10,000m.
As for sprints, Kiersten Franklin (100m/200m/both relays) is looking to be a major contributor for point totals for the Falcons. Reagan Campbell is also looking to make some noise in the 400m, as well as freshman Erinae Coleman in the 100m.
Morgan Patterson and DaMya Barker's experience will hope to bode well in the hurdles, while Bianca Staples and Sabrina Imes are looking to replicate their 1-2 performance in the triple jump from the indoor championships.
Katherine Mendenhall comes in with the fourth-best high jump mark in the conference, while Jenna Lucas is looking to score in the heptathlon.
Defending champions Kent State as well as Eastern Michigan, Akron and Western Michigan are looking to contend with Bowling Green for the MAC crown.
The Falcons are also hoping to become the first team since Akron in 2022 to win both an indoor and outdoor MAC title in the same season.
"We're focused on doing things well and having a deep belief in the program," Snelling said. "We have reflected on the lessons learned from the indoor championships and had a lot of different scorers in different events then. We're looking to have that same balanced kind of approach this time around."
