Winners of the competition will be featured soloists with the BG Philharmonia on February 15, 2025.

- Dec 57:30 PMExpanding Boundaries Speakers Series – From Spiral Nebulae to Island Universes: Measuring the Size of the Milky Way and its Place in the Scale of the UniverseJoin us in the Planetarium for the next public talk in the Expanding Boundaries Speakers Series, titled “From Spiral Nebulae to Island Universes: Measuring the Size of the Milky Way and its Place in the Scale of the Universe” presented by Kate Dellenbusch, BGSU Department of Physics & AstronomyThroughout history, humans have looked up at the sky and noticed a milky band stretching across the sky. However, it has only been about a century since the nature and size of the Milky Way has been well understood and that the “spiral nebulae” observed in the sky were in fact separate galaxies outside the Milky Way. In this talk, I’ll discuss some of the observations and theories of scientists throughout history as humanity attempted to understand the size and structure of the Milky Way.This program is the last in a series of six sessions on a wide range of interdisciplinary topics, each with a connection to astronomy. The talk will follow the regularly scheduled 6:30 p.m. Planetarium show.
