This will be Lt. Col. Ryan Nowlin’s ‘00, ‘04 first inauguration as director of “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band

For the first time as director of the United States Marine Band, a two-time Bowling Green State University alumnus will lead the official musical performances during the presidential inauguration on Jan. 20, part of a longstanding tradition dating back to 1801.

Lt. Col. Ryan Nowlin ‘00, ‘04 will lead the “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band throughout the ceremony, including the performance to honor newly sworn-in president Donald Trump. The band will be seated directly beneath the inaugural platform.

Nowlin joined the U.S. Marine Band in 2010 and was named director in 2024.

“Serving as the director of ‘The President’s Own’ is the honor of a lifetime,” Nowlin said. “National events, like the presidential inauguration, remind us all not only of the central, essential role of the Marine Band in American history but the importance of the stewardship entrusted to us all.

“This honor is also a reminder of the transformative power of education. I’m grateful to BGSU for providing me with the knowledge and experience that allows me to serve my country through music.”

Nowlin, who earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from BGSU, left an enduring musical legacy at the University. Nowlin’s “Sounds of the Centennial” and “Go BG Warriors” are frequently played during BGSU events and marching band pregame shows.

Nowlin taught instrumental music for 10 years in Ohio before joining the Marine Band, America’s oldest continuously active professional musical organization, as a staff arranger in 2010. He was appointed assistant director and commissioned as first lieutenant in 2014. He rose to the rank of captain in 2016 and was named associate director of the band in 2020.

As a composer and arranger, Nowlin has been commissioned to write pieces for concert bands, choirs, brass quintets, solo horn and piano. His works have also been heard nationally on radio and television broadcasts.

Two of Nowlin’s compositions were featured on Inauguration Day 2021 when the Marine Band performed his “Godspeed” during the prelude and “Let Freedom Ring” during the ceremony. He also participated in the 2013 and 2017 presidential inaugurations.

On Inauguration Day 2025, Nowlin will lead the Marine Band as they accompany guest artists, including Carrie Underwood, Lee Greenwood and Christopher Macchio. He will march with the band during the inaugural parade, lead the band for an inaugural ball, and conduct the Marine Chamber Orchestra, which will provide music for the National Prayer Service on Jan. 21 at the Washington National Cathedral.

As Marine Band director, Nowlin recently led the Marine Chamber Orchestra and Joint Armed Forces Chorus to provide music for the state funeral of President Jimmy Carter at the Washington National Cathedral.
