Bowling Green Challenges Michigan Early, Late Surge Sends Wolverines To Win
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team traveled north to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take on the Michigan Wolverines Tuesday (April 22). The Falcons and Wolverines battled through the first six innings, including a two-run sixth for Bowling Green, with the score at 4-2. However, Michigan tallied five runs between the seventh and eighth innings to move ahead for the eventual 9-2 final score. The loss moved BGSU to 25-14 on the season going into the MAC series this weekend against Eastern Michigan.
For the Falcons, Garrett Wright led the way, extending his on-base streak to 27 games, the longest by a Falcon this season. Wright added an RBI and a run scored for the Orange and Brown. Cooper McKenzie recorded the other BGSU RBI while the other run was scored by Alex Laird. As for on the mound, Luke Krouse made his first start of the season, going a career-long five innings for Bowling Green.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Michigan scored in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead in the game.
- The first Bowling Green hit of the day came in the third inning with an Alex Laird single into right field. Gunner Antillon followed with one of his own to put two on. Garrett Wright nearly brought everyone home with a deep fly to center, but it was caught on the warning track to end the inning with Michigan's 1-0 lead still intact.
- A solo home run in the third inning extended the Wolverine lead to 2-0. A two-run home run in the fourth extended the score to 4-0.
- The Falcons got on the board in the top of the sixth. Laird was hit by a pitch, stole second and took third on a wild pitch. With Laird on third, Wright pushed a single to left center over the outstretched glove of the shortstop, scoring Laird for a 4-1 score.
- TJ Takats kept the rally going with a single up the middle, putting runners on first and second. Cooper McKenzie followed with a liner to left, scoring Wright for a 4-2 score, prompting a Michigan pitching change, the first of the game for either team.
- Michigan increased their score in the seventh inning with four runs for an 8-2 advantage. The Wolverines added to their total in the eighth for a 9-2 final.

- Coming off one of the hottest weeks in the nation, Gunner Antillon kept his hot streak going at the plate with a hit for the Falcons, giving him a five-game hitting streak.
- Alex Laird tallied the first BGSU hit of the day, giving him a hit in six of his last seven games while reaching base in all seven.
- Garrett Wright registered an RBI single in the sixth inning, extending his on-base streak to 27 games, the longest by a Falcon this season. Wright has also scored in six consecutive games.
- TJ Takats lined a single up the middle in the sixth inning, pushing his hitting streak to a now team-leading seven games.
- Getting his first start of the season, Luke Krouse tossed a career-high five innings for the Falcons while hurling a career-high 80 pitches.
- Micah Smith entered the game in relief for the Falcons, coming on to start the seventh inning, marking his collegiate debut on the mound. Smith registered his first strikeout in the appearance, going one inning.

The Falcons will be back home later this week, hosting Eastern Michigan in a three-game weekend series. BGSU and EMU will start the series on Friday (April 25) with a 3 p.m. start before 1 p.m. first pitches on both Saturday (April 26) and Sunday (April 27).

- Garrett Wright Named MAC Scholar-Athlete Of The Week For Second Time This SeasonCLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced the MAC Scholar-Athletes of the Week Wednesday afternoon (April 23). Of those named, Bowling Green's Garrett Wright was named the MAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week. A Criminal Justice major, Wright has maintained a 4.00 GPA. This is Wright's second Scholar-Athlete award as a member of the Falcons after being named two weeks ago on April 9. As for BGSU, this is the fourth time a Falcon has been named with women's basketball's Amy Velasco collecting the other two recognitions. A student-athlete can win the award a max of two times per season.
- Penrod Named To NCBWA Stopper Of The Year Award Midseason Watch ListDALLAS, Texas – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced the Midseason Watch List for the 20th annual Stopper of the Year award Wednesday afternoon (April 23). Of the 56 relief pitchers named to the list, Bowling Green's Connar Penrod was one of the players listed. For this award, players must be named to the midseason watch list to be eligible to become a finalist. The NCBWA will announce finalists on Wednesday, June 4 with the winner being named on Friday, June 13 at the 2025 College World Series.
- Antillon Earns Dick Howser Trophy National Player Of The WeekMORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced the Dick Howser Trophy National Player of the Week awards presented by The Game Headwear Tuesday afternoon (April 22) just before BGSU's game against Michigan. Of those named, Bowling Green's Gunner Antillon earned National Co-Hitter of the Week alongside Notre Dame's sophomore catcher Carson Tinney. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season. For Antillon, the accolade makes his third of the week after being the MAC Player of the Week and the Brooks Wallace Award Player of the Week, which is presented to the nation's most outstanding shortstop.
- Antillon Named Brooks Wallace Award Player Of The WeekOVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The College Baseball Foundation announced this week's recipients of their weekly awards Tuesday afternoon (April 22). This week the Brooks Wallace Award Player of the Week, presented to the nation's most outstanding shortstop, was earned by Bowling Green's Gunner Antillon. This is Antillon's first national award after earning MAC Player of the Week Monday (April 21). Antillon joins DJ Newman as BGSU players this season to be recognized by the College Baseball Foundation. Newman was named the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week on March 18.
