Late Inning Surge Gives Falcons Sweep Over Ohio For First Time Since 2010
ATHENS, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team completed the weekend sweep over the Ohio Bobcats on Sunday (March 9), topping OU 10-7. The sweep is the first for the Falcons against Ohio since 2010 and gives BGSU a 3-0 start to MAC play in back-to-back seasons for the first time since 1999-2000. The win also marks the 100th for Kyle Hallock as a head coach, all with Bowling Green.
On Sunday, the Falcons fell behind early, trailing 6-0 entering the seventh inning. However, the BGSU offense went to work in the late innings. Bowling Green scored five in the seventh, three in eighth and two in the ninth to secure the win. Both Gavin Ganun and Zack Horky logged three-hit days while scoring three times each as well. For the third time this weekend, the Falcons logged a save out of the bullpen, this time coming from Titus Lotz, the first of his career and the third different Falcon with a save this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the second inning, Caden Parker walked and stole second followed by a Gavin Ganun walk. Garrett Sloan nearly brought home at least one run, but a leaping effort at the warning track by Ohio's left fielder snagged the deep line drive, keeping the scoreboard empty.
- The first run of the game crossed in the third inning for Ohio, taking a 1-0 lead. A home run later in the frame extended their advantage to 3-0.
- For the Falcons in the fourth inning, Ganun hit a single into center field, marking the first BGSU hit of the day.
- Ohio added a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth, pushing the score to 5-0 Bobcats. OU threatened for more, but Luke Krouse came out of the pen and worked out of the jam.
- Ohio knocked a solo home run in the fifth inning for a 6-0 tally.
- Bowling Green made noise in the seventh after an OU pitching change. Ganun started the inning with his second hit of the day while Garrett Sloan was hit by a pitch and Zack Horky knocked a single to quickly load the bases.
- Gunner Antillon kept it going with a single through the left side, scoring Ganun for the first BGSU run of the game. All runners moved up one base, keeping the bases loaded with no outs.
- Sam Seidel was able to lift a fly ball to deep center for a sacrifice fly, scoring Sloan for a 6-2 score.
- Wright ripped a bases-clearing double down the left field line, bringing in both Horky and Antillon to make it a 6-4 score, prompting another Ohio call to the bullpen.
- A grounder in the inning moved Wright to third before a passed ball brought him home, closing the gap to just one with a 6-5 Ohio lead at the seventh-inning stretch.
- A solo home run in the bottom of the seventh gave Ohio an insurance run, 7-5.
- BGSU continued their momentum in the eighth inning. Ganun walked to start the run before a Sloan double found the left center gap, putting two runners in scoring position to start the inning.
- Horky belted a three-run blast to left center, his first home run of the season, to put the Falcons in front 8-7.
- In the ninth, Ganun reached to start the third straight inning, doubling to the left field corner. Later in the inning Horky singled and Antillon was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Seidel was able to capitalize with a sacrifice fly to deep center, scoring Ganun as insurance for a 9-7 lead.
- An intentional walk to Wright loaded the bases, but another walk followed to Birchmeier, pushing home Horky for a 10-7 advantage.
