DJ Newman Earns National Recognition From College Baseball Foundation
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – The College Baseball Foundation announced this week's recipient of the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Week award Tuesday afternoon (March 18). This week, the honor was earned by Bowling Green's DJ Newman. For Newman, a right-handed pitcher and designated hitter, this is his first official national award of the season, although he was named to multiple preseason All-American teams as a two-way player.
Newman was on fire at the plate last week, going 7-for-12 (.583) to help lead the Falcons to a three-game sweep of the Akron Zips. Newman racked up two home runs and four RBIs while scoring six runs and earning three walks. The weekend outing raised his season batting average to a team-best .434 and upped his season RBI total to 10. On the mound, he started game one of the series and logged four innings, allowing three hits and two runs while walking two and striking out two. Bowling Green won the game Newman started by a score of 7-3.
The John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award is presented annually by the College Baseball Foundation to honor the nation's top combo pitcher-position player. Olerud, who was inducted into the National College Baseball Hall of Fame in 2007, was a standout pitcher and first baseman at Washington State University from 1987 through 1989.
