Birchmeier, Laird Launch Home Runs In Weekend Finale
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Bowling Green State University baseball team wrapped up the second weekend of the season on Sunday (Feb. 23) against USC Upstate. After a comeback win for Bowling Green over USC Upstate on Friday (Feb. 21), the Spartans got the best of the Falcons on Sunday with a 9-2 final. Bowling Green's two runs came from solo home runs off the bats of Brady Birchmeier and Alex Laird. Despite the loss, the Falcons are 4-2 on the season, winning four of their first six games for the first time since 2007.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the bottom of the first, an error in the field resulted in an Upstate run. The Spartans tallied three unearned runs in the inning for a 3-0 advantage.
- A two-run home run in the second inning extended the lead for USC Upstate to 5-0.
- The Falcons tallied their first run of the game in the top of the third. With two outs, Alex Laird belted a solo shot to left field, his first career home run.
- Upstate responded with a run in the fourth inning and then another in the fifth, pushing their lead to 7-1.
- The second Bowling Green run of the game came in a similar fashion to the first. In the seventh inning, Brady Birchmeier launched a ball deep over the left field wall, his second home run of the season for a 7-2 score.
- An answer for USC Upstate followed in the bottom of the seventh with a pair, making it a 9-2 tally.

- Alex Laird's third inning home run not only marked his first collegiate home run, but also tallied his first collegiate RBI as well.
- Brady Birchmeier's home run in the seventh went down as his second of the season while also giving him a team-leading 10 RBI on the year. Through six games, Birchmeier has already matched his 2024 home run total.
- Birchmeier's home run extended his hitting streak to open the season to six games, logging at least one hit in each. Going back to last season, Birchmeier has reached base in eight-straight games, the second longest streak on the team.
- Garrett Wright logged a single for BGSU in the contest, extending his team-leading on-base streak to 14 games going back to last year.
- Logan Bell and Connar Penrod both continued their strong starts to the season. Penrod now has three scoreless innings with six strikeouts to start the year while Bell has two scoreless frames and two punch outs.
UP NEXT
The Falcons' game on Tuesday against Butler has been canceled due to field conditions and weather. With that change, the next series will begin against Southern Indiana on Friday (Feb. 28) before taking on Southern Illinois on Saturday and Sunday (March 1-2). Friday is scheduled for a 1 p.m. EST start with Saturday set for 3 p.m. EST and Sunday for 2 p.m. EST.

- BGSU Completes Weekend Sweep Over Eastern Michigan With 8-4 WinBOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team completed the weekend sweep over Eastern Michigan, registering an 8-4 victory on Sunday (April 27) at Steller Field. A four-run first inning catapulted the Falcons in front, stretching their lead to as large as 7-1 before securing the 8-4 final. Landon Willeman started the game for BGSU, giving up just one run in 4.2 innings of work before handing the ball over to Ty Roder who finished out the game from there. As a team, the Falcons saw every player in the lineup log a hit, totaling 14 as a team, all singles. Bowling Green now moves to 28-14 on the year while being 16-8 within the MAC.
- Falcons Win In Game Two Walk-Off To Sweep Doubleheader Over EMUBOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team claimed a pair of wins on Saturday (April 26) sweeping a doubleheader over Eastern Michigan. The day started by resuming Friday's (April 25) game in the fourth inning, leading to an 11-4 BGSU victory. The Falcons followed it up in game two with a two-out ninth inning rally to walk-it-off over EMU in a 10-9 final, setting up the potential for a sweep on Sunday (April 27). The Falcons are now 27-14 on the season while being 15-8 within the MAC.
- BGSU-EMU Friday Baseball Moved Up To 1 p.m. First PitchBOWLING GREEN, Ohio – Due to ever changing weather conditions forecasted for Friday evening, Friday's (April 25) BGSU baseball game against the Eastern Michigan Eagles has been moved up to a 1 p.m. start at Steller Field. - Garrett Wright Named MAC Scholar-Athlete Of The Week For Second Time This SeasonCLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced the MAC Scholar-Athletes of the Week Wednesday afternoon (April 23). Of those named, Bowling Green's Garrett Wright was named the MAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week. A Criminal Justice major, Wright has maintained a 4.00 GPA. This is Wright's second Scholar-Athlete award as a member of the Falcons after being named two weeks ago on April 9. As for BGSU, this is the fourth time a Falcon has been named with women's basketball's Amy Velasco collecting the other two recognitions. A student-athlete can win the award a max of two times per season.
- Penrod Named To NCBWA Stopper Of The Year Award Midseason Watch ListDALLAS, Texas – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced the Midseason Watch List for the 20th annual Stopper of the Year award Wednesday afternoon (April 23). Of the 56 relief pitchers named to the list, Bowling Green's Connar Penrod was one of the players listed. For this award, players must be named to the midseason watch list to be eligible to become a finalist. The NCBWA will announce finalists on Wednesday, June 4 with the winner being named on Friday, June 13 at the 2025 College World Series.
- Antillon Earns Dick Howser Trophy National Player Of The WeekMORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) announced the Dick Howser Trophy National Player of the Week awards presented by The Game Headwear Tuesday afternoon (April 22) just before BGSU's game against Michigan. Of those named, Bowling Green's Gunner Antillon earned National Co-Hitter of the Week alongside Notre Dame's sophomore catcher Carson Tinney. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season. For Antillon, the accolade makes his third of the week after being the MAC Player of the Week and the Brooks Wallace Award Player of the Week, which is presented to the nation's most outstanding shortstop.
