Falcons Drop Doubleheader Friday To RedHawks

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University baseball team hosted the Miami (OH) RedHawks for a doubleheader Friday (April 4), featuring the top two teams in the MAC standings entering the day. Both teams received strong outings from their starting pitchers in both games, but the RedHawks pulled out wins in both contests to sweep the doubleheader day. The results push BGSU to 20-9 on the season while being 10-4 within the MAC. The series will conclude on Sunday (April 6) with a 2 p.m. start between BGSU and Miami.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1

  • After three scoreless innings, the first hit of the game came in the bottom of the fourth with Garrett Wright launching a solo home run to left field for a 1-0 BGSU lead.
  • The RedHawks answered in the top of the fifth, scoring one to tie the game at 1-1.
  • A two-run home run for Miami in the top of the sixth pushed the RedHawks in front with a 3-1 score.
  • Another two-run home run for the RedHawks in the top of the ninth extended their lead to 5-1. 
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Gavin Ganun, Gunner Antillon and TJ Takats all drew walks to load the bases. Wright was able to slap a single through the right side of the infield, scoring Ganun for a 5-2 score.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2

  • After two scoreless innings, the RedHawks scored first with one in the third inning. Miami added another run in the fifth for a 2-0 lead.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Gunner Antillon and Garrett Wright were both hit by pitches separated by a Zack Horky single to load the bases. Sam Seidel doubled to left field, clearing the bases for a 3-2 Bowling Green lead. 
  • Miami scored five unearned runs in the seventh, taking a 7-3 advantage. 
  • Bowling Green answered in the bottom half. Wright was hit by a pitch and Seidel singled to put two on for the Falcons. Caden Parker was able to single through the left side, scoring Wright for a 7-4 score.

  • Garrett Wright logged a hit and scored in both games for the Falcons. Wright now has a six-game hitting streak, tied with DJ Newman for the longest active streak on the team. Wright has also scored in all six games as well, logging 11 hits and 10 runs scored over the last six contests. Additionally, Wright has reached base in 17 straight games, the second-longest active streak on the team.
  • Wright was hit by a pitch twice in the second game, increasing his hold on the program career HBP record with 35 and moving up the single-season list. Wright has been hit 14 times this season, tying him for third in program history with Jake Thomas (2012). Last year, Wright broke the program record for a single-season HBPs with 21. 
  • Caden Parker reached base in both games for the Falcons as well, extending his on-base streak to 21 games, the longest streak this season by a BGSU player. 
  • Sam Seidel registered another three-hit game, his fourth time this year with three hits or more in a game. Seidel added three RBI, his fifth time this year with three or more RBI.
  • Nate Kress continued a strong stretch on the mound. Over his last seven outings, Kress has allowed just one earned run, spanning over 14.2 innings of work. 
  • Titus Lotz matched his season-high for innings pitched in a game with 2.1, going the same distance against USC Upstate on Feb. 21. In both outings, Lotz tallied a career-high three strikeouts while not allowing a run.
