Garrett Wright Named MAC Scholar-Athlete Of The Week
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced the MAC Scholar-Athletes of the Week Wednesday afternoon (April 9) just before Bowling Green's game against Youngstown State. Of those named, Bowling Green's Garrett Wright was named the MAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week. A Criminal Justice major, Wright has maintained a 4.00 GPA. This is Wright's first Scholar-Athlete award as a member of the Falcons. As for BGSU, this is the third time a Falcon has been named this season with women's basketball's Amy Velasco collecting the other two recognitions.
The Scholar Athlete of the Week Award is presented to a MAC male and/or female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. An institution can nominate up to one male and one female student-athlete per week in any of that current season's sports. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs).
Wright had a strong week for the Falcons at the plate. In a three-game series against Miami (OH) where BGSU plated 13 runs, Wright scored five of them and drove in an additional four, leaving just four runs from the weekend that he didn't either score himself or record as an RBI. Additionally, Wright maintained a .500 batting average with six hits, including both of BGSU's home runs over the course of the weekend series, a battle of the top-two teams in the MAC. Wright was also hit-by-a-pitch three times, bringing his season total to 15, which is tied for second in program history behind only his own program record of 21 from last season. Wright concluded the weekend in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak and an 18-game on-base streak. On top of that, he scored in seven consecutive games for the Falcons as well as 17 of the last 18 with a total of 30 runs scored over the last 18 games and 12 over the last seven.
