Garrett Wright Named MAC Scholar-Athlete Of The Week For Second Time This Season
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced the MAC Scholar-Athletes of the Week Wednesday afternoon (April 23). Of those named, Bowling Green's Garrett Wright was named the MAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week. A Criminal Justice major, Wright has maintained a 4.00 GPA. This is Wright's second Scholar-Athlete award as a member of the Falcons after being named two weeks ago on April 9. As for BGSU, this is the fourth time a Falcon has been named with women's basketball's Amy Velasco collecting the other two recognitions. A student-athlete can win the award a max of two times per season.
The Scholar Athlete of the Week Award is presented to a MAC male and/or female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that week's competition. An institution can nominate up to one male and one female student-athlete per week in any of that current season's sports. The winners are selected by a representative of the MAC's Faculty Athletics Representatives (FARs).
Wright put together an impressive week at the plate for the Falcons. Making four starts, Wright recorded a .611 batting average for the Orange and Brown, logging 11 hits in 18 at-bats. Wright registered a team-high nine runs scored for the weekend, ripping four doubles in the process and adding three RBI. Wright closed out the week with back-to-back four-hit games against the MAC-leading Ball State Cardinals, knocking a double in each contest as well. Wright scored three times in a game twice over the week, touching home plate at least once in each game. On top of his high average, Wright posted a .708 on-base percentage, drawing three walks and being hit by a pitch three times, bringing his season HBP total to 20, just one away from tying his own program record that he set last season.
