HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the top of the first, Gunner Antillon legged out an infield single. Walks to DJ Newman and Brady Birchmeier loaded the bases, setting up a two-RBI single by Caden Parker with both Antillon and Newman scoring for a quick 2-0 advantage.
  • Back-to-back solo home runs for Southern Illinois in the second inning put the Salukis on the board with a 2-2 tied game.
  • Another solo home run for SUI, this time coming in the fourth inning, reignited the scoring. The Salukis added another run later in the inning for a 4-2 advantage through four innings.
  • The Falcons answered in the sixth. Parker began the inning with a single to shallow center and took second on a wild pitch. Sam Seidel laced a triple down the right field line, scoring Parker for a 4-3 tally.
  • Coming in as a pinch hitter, Brock Amelung kept the momentum going. He put a ball in play that scored Seidel, knotting it up at 4-4.
  • Later in the inning, Chase Chopin drew a walk and scored from first on a Garrett Wright double to put the Falcons in front 5-4.
  • In the seventh, singles by Newman and Brady Birchmeier put two on for the Falcons. SIU worked for two outs, but a walk to Alex Laird loaded the bases. Cooper McKenzie put a ball in play that resulted in a fielding error. Each Falcon advanced a bag, including Newman scoring for a 6-4 advantage.
  • The bottom half of the seventh resulted in four runs for Southern Illinois with them moving back in front, 8-6.
  • In the ninth inning, Gavin Ganun was called on to pinch hit with one out and drove a triple to right field, but couldn't score to extend the game.
