Dunaway Dominates With 19 Kills As Falcons Romp Ramblers

CHICAGO, Ill. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team wrapped up the Loyola Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 13) against host Loyola Chicago. The Falcons were able to claim 3-1 win behind an efficient attack that hit a season-best .312. Marin Dunaway led the way with 19 kills, followed by Avery Hobson (18) and Lauryn Hovey (15) while Amanda Otten set the attack with a season-high 52 assists. The win for the Falcons marks their fourth of the season with all four coming in four sets. Bowling Green will now return home for the first time this year during the regular season, hosting Oakland on Wednesday (Sept. 17) for a 6 p.m. first serve.

The Falcons were able to claim 3-1 win behind an efficient attack that hit a season-best .312. Marin Dunaway led the way with 19 kills, followed by Avery Hobson (18) and Lauryn Hovey (15) while Amanda Otten set the attack with a season-high 52 assists. The win for the Falcons marks their fourth of the season with all four coming in four sets. How It Happened
Set 1: Bowling Green 25, Loyola Chicago 22

  • Lauryn Hovey started the match for the Falcons with a kill, beginning with back-to-back points for a 2-0 advantage. Loyola Chicago tallied their first point, but 4-0 run for BGSU followed for a 6-1 start and a Ramblers timeout.
  • Loyola Chicago ended the run after the timeout, but the Falcons went back to work with another 4-0 run to move the lead to 10-2, including an ace from Avery Anders
  • The Ramblers worked to chip away at the difference with an 8-2 stretch, including a 5-0 burst, closing the gap to 12-10 with a BGSU timeout.
  • Out of the timeout, the Ramblers continued their run, reaching 7-0 with a 10-2 stretch, to knot the score up at 12-12. Loyola jumped ahead, 13-12, with the run extending to 8-0 and the stretch to 11-2. 
  • The Falcons battled back, tying the score at 13-13 before a kill from Marin Dunaway put BGSU back in front. The momentum continued for the Orange and Brown, reaching a 3-0 run to push the lead to 15-13.
  • BGSU and Loyola Chicago began trading points from there, carrying the score to 19-17 in the set before back-to-back Bowling Green points made it 20-17 Falcons with a Rambler timeout.
  • After the timeout, the run continued for the Falcons, reaching a 4-0 stretch with a 22-17 advantage. The back-and-forth resumed from there, taking the score to 23-19. 
  • Loyola utilized a 4-1 stretch to close the gap to 24-22, but a Hovey kill clinched the set for the Falcons.

Set 2: Bowling Green 25, Loyola Chicago 21

  • The second set began back-and-forth with ties at each score all the way to 4-4. Consecutive points for Loyola Chicago pushed them in front 6-4 before the trading of points resumed. 
  • The Falcons chipped away at the score before a 5-0 run for Bowling Green pushed them in front with a 13-10 advantage, forcing a timeout from the Ramblers. 
  • Loyola answered out of the timeout with a 3-0 run, tying it up at 13-13, but the Falcons reclaimed the lead with a kill from Hovey. The Hovey kill sparked a 4-0 run for BGSU, taking the lead to 17-13 to prompt the second Loyola Chicago timeout of the set.
  • Out of the break, the Ramblers worked for a 4-1 stretch to pull within one, 18-17, with a Bowling Green timeout.
  • The Falcons responded out of the timeout with back-to-back points, rebuilding the lead to 20-17. Loyola logged a tally, but a 4-0 BGSU run followed to build a 24-18 score.
  • Loyola kept the set going with a 3-0 rally, but a kill for Dunaway secured the set for BGSU, 25-21. 

Set 3: Loyola Chicago 25, Bowling Green 19

  • Hovey began the set with a kill, but the Ramblers worked to build a 7-3 lead, including a 3-0 run. A pair of BGSU points, headlined by a Jessica Andrews ace, cut the score down to 7-5.
  • Two points for Loyola Chicago pushed their lead back to 9-5 before the teams began trading points to a 12-8 tally. The Falcons ended the back-and-forth with a 3-0 burst, pulling within one.
  • Loyola Chicago responded with a 3-0 run, carrying the score to the media timeout at 15-11.
  • The run for the Ramblers continued through the timeout, reaching 5-0 with a 17-11 lead to force a timeout from the Falcons. The run extended to 6-0 with an 18-11 lead.
  • Loyola Chicago moved out to a 20-12 score, but the Falcons battled back. Isabelle Laube's ace aided a 3-0 BGSU burst to cut the score down to 20-15 with a Loyola timeout.
  • Out of the break, two points for Loyola Chicago made it a 22-15 score with the Falcons taking a timeout. The two teams went back-and-forth after the timeout, going to a 24-17 score. BGSU battled with two points, but the Ramblers took the set.

Set 4: Bowling Green 25, Loyola Chicago 20

  • Loyola started the fourth set with two points, but a 5-1 run for the Falcons followed to push BGSU out to a 5-3 advantage in the set. The lead for Bowling Green stretched to 7-4.
  • The two teams traded pairs of points with Loyola drawing within one, 7-6, before BGSU pushed back out to 9-6. From there, the point-trading shifted to one-for-one with the score moving out to 13-10 Falcons. 
  • Two points for the Ramblers closed the gap back to one, 13-12, but the back-and-forth continued to a 15-13 BGSU lead at the media timeout.
  • Soon after the timeout, the Falcons tallied a 3-0 run to push the advantage to 17-13 with Loyola Chicago calling a timeout.
  • Coming out of the timeout, the Falcons extended the run, reaching 6-0 with a 20-13 lead. The Ramblers ended the run, but another two points for BGSU followed, making it a 22-14 score.
  • The teams went back-and-forth to a 24-17 score, but the Ramblers kept the match alive with a 4-0 run to make it 24-20 with a BGSU timeout.
  • After the timeout, Hobson landed a kill to secure the set and the match for the Falcons.

Falcon Stat Facts

  • As a team, the Falcons hit a season-best .312 for the match. Marin Dunaway topped the stat sheet, landing a team-high 19 kills in just her second career match. Dunaway maintained a .424 hitting percentage in the process with the 19 kills coming on 33 attacks with just five errors.
  • Avery Hobson followed with 18 kills for the Orange and Brown while adding eight digs, nearly getting a double-double. 
  • Lauryn Hovey added to the attack with 15 kills while adding seven digs, six blocks, four aces and three assists to her stat line with new season-highs in blocks, aces and assists. For blocks, Hovey is up to 277 block assists for her career, bumping her up to sixth on the program's Rally Scoring List. 
  • Jessica Andrews tied for the team-lead in blocks with six. The mark gives her 324 block assists in the Orange and Brown. The total pushes Andrews up to fourth on the Rally Scoring Era list and eighth on the all-time list, both for Career Block Assists.
  • Amanda Otten set the attack for the Falcons with a season-high 52 assists. She set the attack to a .312 mark while adding a season-high seven kills herself to go along with five digs and two blocks. 
  • With the win, all four of BGSU's wins this season have come in four sets. The win also marks the first true road win for the Falcons this year after the first three were all neutral site matches. The Falcons are also 4-0 when logging a hitting percentage better than their opponent and 2-0 when playing on Saturday. 

Up Next
Bowling Green will return home to the Stroh Center on Wednesday (Sept. 17) to host Oakland in the home opener with a 6 p.m. first serve. BGSU will quickly turn around and be back on the road, taking on Michigan State on Friday (Sept. 19) and Binghamton on Saturday (Sept. 20), both in East Lansing.
