BGVB Downs Rockets For First Sweep In Battle Of I-75 For Either Team Since 2008, Ending 17-Year Streak

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team captured a three-set sweep over the Toledo Rockets Tuesday night (Oct. 28) in front of a packed Stroh Center. The sweep marked the first for either team in the Battle of I-75 since Oct. 25, 2008, which was also a 3-0 BGSU win at home. For the Falcons, the team registered 79 digs, the most in a three-set match since 2006. Additionally, Avery Hobson, Amanda Otten and Anna Sitek all registered double-doubles, giving BGSU three double-doubles in the same match for the third time in the last two weeks after previously not having done it since 2023. The win moves BGSU to 13-11 on the season while being 7-5 in the MAC.
How It Happened
Set 1: Bowling Green 26, Toledo 24
- An early 3-0 run for Toledo put them in front 5-2 in the early going, but the Falcons closed the gap to 6-4. From there, BGSU rattled off a 4-0 run to jump in front 8-6.
- The back-and-forth continued with Toledo working to tie it up at 9-9. Consecutive BGSU points pushed the Falcons ahead, 11-9, but Toledo again tied, this time at 13-13.
- The teams traded points from there to the media timeout with Bowling Green leading 15-14 at the break.
- After the media timeout, ties followed at each point from 15-15 up to 17-17 before back-to-back BGSU points made it a 19-17 lead with a Toledo timeout.
- Out of the timeout, Toledo tied it up at 19-19 to force a Bowling Green timeout. The Toledo run stretched to 3-0 with a 20-19 lead before being tied at 20-20.
- Ties again followed up to a 22-22 score before back-to-back BGSU points made it 24-22 with a Toledo timeout. The Rockets again responded after the break to tie it at 24-24 with a BGSU timeout.
- The Falcons responded with a block to take the advantage before an Avery Hobson kill clinched the set in extra points.
Set 2: Bowling Green 25, Toledo 20
- The second set began similarly to the first with Toledo jumping out to a 5-2 lead, but the Falcons continued to chip away at the deficit, tying it up at 9-9. The run rolled into a 5-0 burst for BGSU, taking a 12-9 lead to force a Toledo timeout.
- The run continued after the timeout, reaching 6-0 for the Falcons, before Toledo answered back. A 3-0 run for the Rockets later in the set closed the gap to 14-13.
- The two teams traded points to a 15-15 tie, extending to 16-16 with a 4-0 BGSU run pushing the Falcons back to a 19-16 lead with the second Toledo timeout of the set.
- BGSU added another after the break for a 5-0 run. From there, the two teams traded points through the end of the set with the Falcons taking a 25-20 score.
Set 3: Bowling Green 29, Toledo 27
- The Falcons opened the third set with a 3-0 run, but Toledo worked to tie it up at 5-5. The run for Toledo reached 5-0 with a 7-5 advantage.
- Bowling Green worked to tie it up again at 7-7, but a 4-1 stretch for the Rockets pushed them out to an 11-8 lead.
- The Falcons ended the run, but a 4-0 run for the Rockets worked around a BGSU timeout, creating a 15-9 lead. The Orange and Brown tallied two points to cut the lead down to 15-11 with a Toledo timeout.
- BGSU stretched the run to 4-0, pulling within two at 15-13, but Toledo answered with two points for a 17-13 lead and the second Bowling Green timeout of the set.
- The teams continued going back-and-forth until the Falcons pulled back within two, 20-18, with Toledo taking their second timeout of the set.
- After the break, Toledo added two points to move their lead to 22-18, but the Falcons answered back with a 5-0 run to reclaim the lead, 23-22.
- Toledo tied it up at 23-23 with the ties carrying at each point up to 27-27, sending the set deep into extra points. A kill from Edyta Waclawczyk gave BGSU the advantage before a Toledo attack error sealed the set and the match, 29-27.

Falcon Stat Facts
- The sweep for the Falcons marks the first for either team in the Battle of I-75 in 17 years. The last sweep in the series came nearly 17 years ago to the day with BGSU sweeping Toledo on Oct. 25, 2008 at home.
- As a team, the Falcons recorded a season-high 79 digs in just three sets of action. The mark just missed the program's Rally Scoring Era record for digs in a three-set match, currently set at 88. The total is the most overall since having 79 against Western Michigan in a five-set match last year on Nov. 23, 2024. As for a three-set match, it's the most by the Falcons since logging 81 on Oct. 15, 2006 against Eastern Michigan.
- For the third time in the last two weeks, the Falcons had three players log a double-double in the same match. Additionally, two more Falcons just missed double-doubles by two or fewer tallies in a category.
- Amanda Otten led the way with her sixth double-double of the season in her return to the court. Otten finished with 18 assists and 11 digs for the Falcons.
- Avery Hobson followed Otten's lead, also posting her sixth double-double of the season, finishing with 13 kills and 12 digs, finishing second on the team in both stats.
- Anna Sitek rounded out the trio of double-doubles, her third of the season. Sitek concluded with a team-high 19 assists while adding 10 digs.
- Sydnie Hernandez just missed what would have been her first double-double of her collegiate career. Hernandez tallied a team-high 17 digs and a career-high nine assists.
- Edyta Waclawczyk just missed a double-double as well. Waclawczyk landed a team-high 17 kills while registering eight digs, coming two digs shy. She also hit a team-best .311 in the match and was perfect on 21 serve receive attempts.
- Helen Wilford posted a team-high seven blocks of the Falcons, knocking down one solo and six block assists. Wilford has now led the team in blocks a team-high seven times this season. With 10 blocks as a team, Wilford was in on 70-percent.
- Marija Tabak filled the stat sheet for BGSU as well. In addition to Tabak's seven kills, she added a career-high eight digs while also registering two block assists.
- Avery Anders landed the lone ace for the Falcons while adding six digs and an assist to her stat line.

- Battle Of I-75 Home Midweek Match Leads Three-Match Week For BGVBBOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will have a trio of matches this week in the MAC, beginning at home before hitting the road. The Falcons will first host the second leg of this season's Battle of I-75, welcoming the rival Toledo Rockets to the Stroh Center Tuesday night (Oct. 28). BGSU and UT are set for a 6 p.m. start at the Stroh Center with the night including an Orange Wave and Trick or Treat. From there, the Falcons will hit the road for a pair of matches against Miami (OH). The first will be Friday (Oct. 31) with a 6:30 p.m. first serve followed by a 7 p.m. start on Saturday (Nov. 1). All three matches for the Falcons this week will be available to stream on ESPN+.
- Falcons Fight Through Five Sets With Western Michigan For Second Straight MatchKALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team concluded the weekend series against Western Michigan on Saturday (Oct. 25) with another five-set fight. The Falcons took the first set, beginning the back-and-forth through the first four sets. In the fifth, Western Michigan pulled ahead to take the fifth set. The Falcons will be back on the court on Tuesday (Oct. 28) for the Battle of I-75 with a 6 p.m. first serve inside the Stroh Center.
- Broncos Battle Back Against Bowling Green In Five-Set MatchKALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team took on the Western Michigan Broncos Friday night (Oct. 24). The Falcons jumped out to a two-set lead, but Western Michigan made adjustments during the break between the second and third periods that changed the course of the match. From there, the Broncos battled back to take a 3-2 final score, completing the comeback. The two teams will be back on the court Saturday (Oct. 25) at 4 p.m. to complete the weekend series.
- Falcons Resume Road Slate With Trip To KalamazooKALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will be back on the road for the first time since Oct. 7, heading north to Kalamazoo, Mich. to face the Western Michigan Broncos. Both Bowling Green and Western Michigan enter the weekend with 6-3 MAC records, tied for third in the conference. The two will square off first on Friday (Oct. 24) with a 6 p.m. first serve before transitioning to a 4 p.m. start on Saturday (Oct. 25). Both matches will be available to stream on ESPN+.
- Sydnie Hernandez Named MAC Defensive Player Of The WeekCLEVELAND, Ohio – The Mid-American Conference announced the MAC Players of the Week Monday afternoon (Oct. 20). Of those named, Bowling Green's Sydnie Hernandez was named the Defensive Player of the Week. For Hernandez, this is her first career MAC weekly award. As for the team, Hernandez is the sixth different Falcon this season to be named a MAC Player of the Week and the second to earn a Defensive Player of the Week honor, joining Helen Wilford (Sept. 29).
