OXFORD, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team tallied a 3-0 sweep over the Miami RedHawks on Saturday (Nov. 2), advancing to 16-8 on the season and 11-2 in MAC play. With results from around the conference, the Falcons now have sole possession of first place in the MAC standings with five matches remaining in the regular season. Bowling Green will return to the court on Tuesday (Nov. 5), hosting the rival Toledo Rockets in the Battle of I-75. 

How It Happened 
Set 1: Bowling Green 25, Miami (OH) 20

• Miami tallied the first point followed by an Alexis Mettille kill for the Falcons, but a 3-0 run pushed the RedHawks to an early 4-1 lead in the match.
• The lead for Miami stretched to 6-2 in the set, but the Falcons utilized a 4-0 run, capped off by a Lauryn Hovey ace, to tie it up at 6-6.
• Two points for Miami put the RedHawks back in front, 8-6, followed by the two teams trading points to a 13-11 score.
• BGSU tallied consecutive points to end the back-and-forth with a Hovey ace tying the match at 13-13 before the run extended to 3-0 with a 14-13 BGSU lead.
• The RedHawks answered with two points to reclaim the lead with a 15-14 score at the media timeout of the first set.
• The back-and-forth carried through the timeout up until two BGSU points tied the set up once again, this time at 18-18, forcing a Miami timeout.
• Bowling Green added two more to the run out of the timeout, including an Amanda Otten ace, for a 4-0 stretch and 20-18 lead.
• BGSU and Miami traded points to a 21-20 Bowling Green lead before a 4-0 Falcon run pushed the Falcons to a 25-20 set score.

Set 2: Bowling Green 25, Miami (OH) 19

• The momentum from the end of the first set carried into the second for the Falcons, beginning the set with a 5-0 run. Going back to the first set, Bowling Green tallied nine-straight points.
• The RedHawks worked back into the set, using a 3-0 run to cut into the BGSU lead to a 7-5 score. The run turned into a 5-1 stretch, trimming the lead to 8-7.
• The Falcons rebuilt their lead with a 5-1 stretch of their own, extending the lead back to five with a 13-8 score.
• Each team tallied a pair of points before the media timeout, coming with the score reading 15-10 in favor of the Falcons.
• Miami registered the first two points after the timeout, but the Falcons answered with a 3-0 run to push the lead to 18-12.
• The point-pendulum swung back-and-forth until a 3-0 Miami run drew the RedHawks within three at 21-18 with a BGSU timeout.
• The timeout allowed the Falcons to regroup, rattling off a 4-1 stretch after, including a 3-0 run to close out the set.

Set 3: Bowling Green 25, Miami (OH) 19

• The first point of the third set went to Miami, but the Falcons were able to record a 5-0 run to move in front 5-1.
• Miami tallied a point to end the run, but Bowling Green resumed their scoring by adding another two points for a 7-1 stretch and 7-2 advantage.
• The RedHawks worked away at the lead, using a 3-0 run to trim the deficit to three at 9-6 Falcons. BGSU landed a point, but the Miami stretch carried to 6-1 with a 10-9 score.
• Bowling Green tallied a 3-0 run to rebuild the lead to 13-9, resulting in a Miami timeout.
• Miami registered two points out of the timeout before the two teams began trading points. The back-and-forth carried until a 4-1 run for the RedHawks tied the set at 18-18, forcing a BGSU timeout.
• Out of the timeout, the Falcons tallied a 4-1 stretch, including a 3-0 run, to reclaim the lead at 22-19 with Miami taking their second timeout.
• The run carried through the timeout for the Falcons, adding three more points for a 7-1 run to conclude the match.

Falcon Stat Facts

• The Falcons have now won 12-straight matches over Miami, including 15 of the last 16. As for matches in Oxford, Bowling Green has won five straight meetings. 
• With results around the MAC, the Falcons are now solely in first place with five matches remaining in the regular season. 
• Amanda Otten set the BGSU attack with 40 assists in just three sets, averaging over 13 per set. Otten added five digs, two aces, two blocks and a kill for the Orange and Brown.
• Alexis Mettille led the Falcons in blocks, rejecting five RedHawk attacks, however, it was Mettille's attack that stood out. Mettille tallied 10 kills, second on the team, on 12 error-free attacks for an impressive .833 hitting percentage. 
• Lauryn Hovey paced the BGSU offense, leading the team in kills (12) and aces (3) while maintaining a .450 hitting percentage. Hovey added eight digs, nearly logging a double-double. 
• Edyta Waclawczyk added a career-high nine kills to the BGSU attack on a career-high 32 attempts. She also tallied a career-high three block assists for the Falcons. 
• Mia Tyler rounded out the Bowling Green attack, landing nine kills for the Falcons while logging an assist, a block and a dig.
• Jessica Andrews tallied four block assists for the Falcons, bringing her career total to 266. With that, Andrews passed Madeline Brandewie (2015-18) for seventh during the program's Rally Scoring Era. 
• Lindsey LaPinta led the team in digs with 12 while adding three assists and an ace. Avery Anders was close behind with nine digs and an ace. Sydnie Hernandez rounded out the defensive specialists with six digs and an assist.

Up Next
BGSU will return home on Tuesday (Nov. 5) to host the rival Toledo Rockets in the second leg of the Battle of I-75 for a 6 p.m. first serve. With it being Election Day, fans can present their "I Voted" sticker for free admission.
