Bowling Green Tops Ohio To Secure Seventh 20-Win Season Of Tomic Era

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team began the final weekend of the regular season with a 3-0 sweep over the Ohio Bobcats at the Stroh Center Friday night (Nov. 15). The Falcons hit .337 over the course of the match, including a .406 mark in the second set, to thwart off the Bobcat challenges. With the win, the Falcons have secured a 20-win season for the seventh time during Coach Tomic's tenure at BGSU as well as the fifth time in the last six seasons. The win also clinched at least a share of the MAC Regular Season title with a chance for the outright title still on the table Saturday night (Nov. 16).
How It Happened
Set 1: Bowling Green 25, Ohio 18
- The Falcons utilized a 3-0 run to take an early 5-2 lead. Bowling Green stretched the score to 9-4, forcing an Ohio timeout after a Sydnie Hernandez ace.
- Bowling Green continued to press forward, extending the lead to 13-6 with the second OU timeout of the set.
- Ohio was able to put together a 3-0 run, trimming the lead to 19-14 late in the set.
- The Falcons and Bobcats traded points through the end of the set from there for the 25-18 score.
Set 2: Bowling Green 25, Ohio 17
- Bowling Green registered an early 4-0 run in the set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. BGSU followed with a 4-1 stretch to expand their lead to 10-3, forcing a timeout from Ohio.
- The two teams resumed the back-and-forth battle before back-to-back BGSU points pushed the Bowling Green lead to 19-11 with the second OU timeout.
- The trading of points carried through the end of the set with the Falcons ending with back-to-back points for the 25-17 score.
Set 3: Bowling Green 25, Ohio 23
- Bowling Green started the set with a 3-0 run, but Ohio worked to tie it back up at 4-4 with a 3-0 run of their own.
- The ties carried to 6-6, but a 4-1 stretch for the Bobcats pushed them to a 10-7 advantage with a Bowling Green timeout.
- BGSU and OU continued trading points up until a 3-1 Bowling Green stretch chipped away at the Bobcat lead, bringing it down to 17-14 with an Ohio timeout.
- Out of the timeout, the Falcons tallied a 4-1 stretch, totaling 7-2 across the timeout, tying the set at 18-18.
- A 3-1 burst for the Bobcats put Ohio back in front, 21-19, with the second BGSU timeout of the set.
- The Falcons responded out of the timeout with back-to-back points, including a wild rally that ended in a Lauryn Hovey kill to tie the set at 21-21, resulting in an OU timeout.
- Ohio landed the first point out of the timeout, but a 3-0 run for the Falcons pushed BGSU in front 24-22. OU answered with a point, but a Hovey, Jessica Andrews block sealed the match for Bowling Green.

- The win marks the 20th this season for the Orange and Brown, giving Coach Tomic her seventh 20-win season at the helm of the Falcons and the fifth in the last six seasons.
- Bowling Green has now won 10-straight matches, the longest winning streak for the Falcons since winning 12 consecutive matches in 2021.
- As a team, Bowling Green hit .337 in the match. Over the last seven matches, the Falcons have hit .320 or better five times.
- Amanda Otten led the Falcons in both assists and digs in the match, logging 30 assists and 13 digs. With her stat line, Otten registered her sixth double-double of the season and her third in the month of November. Otten also landed one of BGSU's two aces in the match.
- Lauryn Hovey joined Otten in the double-double category, landing a team-high 16 kills to go along with 12 digs. Hovey now has three double-doubles on the season. Hovey also maintained a .387 attack percentage with just four errors on 31 attacks.
- With Otten and Hovey both having double-doubles it marked the first time since Nov. 18, 2023 that BGSU had multiple double-doubles in the same match.
- Alexis Mettille led the Falcons in the blocking category, totaling five blocks. Mettille now has 117 total blocks this season, setting a new single-season-high for her BGSU career.
- Mettille added six kills for the Falcons in the match, coming on 10 error-free attacks for a .600 hitting percentage.
- Jessica Andrews landed six kills for the Falcons while contributing three block assists and three digs. Andrews' six kills came on 11 attacks with just two errors for a .364 attack percentage.
- Jordan Newblatt added to the efficient attack for the Falcons, landing eight kills on 23 attacks with just one error for a .304 percentage. Newblatt added two digs, an assist and a block for BGSU.
- Lindsey LaPinta registered 12 digs for the Falcons, tied for second on the team and one off the team lead. LaPinta added a career-high seven assists as well.
- Sydnie Hernandez and Avery Anders produced similar stat lines, each with three digs. Hernandez and Anders combined for 32 of BGSU's 50 serve receives in the match, not allowing Ohio to land an ace over the three sets. Hernandez landed one of BGSU's two aces and added an assist to her stat line.
- Mia Tyler did a little bit of everything for Bowling Green in the match, landing six kills while adding one dig, one solo block and one block assist.
- With the win, the Falcons have clinched at least a share of the MAC Regular Season title. A win on Saturday (Nov. 16) or a Central Michigan loss would grant the Falcons the outright title.

Andrews is one of 10 NCAA student-athletes picked to play in the VNL this year, joining two players from Pitt and one from each of Charlotte, Florida, Illinois, Miami (FL), Oregon, Texas A&M and Washington State. In total, 18 countries are represented with 30-player rosters, creating a pool of just 540 athletes selected to participate. A vast majority of the athletes selected consist of current professional players. Andrews is the first Falcon and believed to be the first MAC player selected to compete.

- Falcons Scheduled For Home Spring Match Friday Against FindlayBOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team will wrap up their spring schedule on Friday (April 18) at home inside the Stroh Center. Bowling Green is scheduled for a 6 p.m. first serve against Findlay.
