Bowling Green’s Comeback Effort Comes Up Short In Five Sets

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team went five sets with Central Michigan Friday night (Oct. 11). The Falcons and Chippewas traded sets with CMU taking the first and the third while BGSU claimed the second and fourth to send the match to a fifth. Similar to the match, the fifth set was back-and-forth between the teams, but Central Michigan came out in the end for the 3-2 final. The Falcons will resume play next week on the road against Buffalo and Akron.
How It Happened
Set 1: Central Michigan 25, Bowling Green 21
- The first set began close with ties coming at 5-5 and 6-6, but Central Michigan pushed out in front to take a 15-12 lead into the media timeout.
- A 4-1 stretch out of the timeout for the Falcons knotted it up at 16-16, keeping it close with the tie stretching to 17-17.
- Central Michigan pushed back in front, taking a 22-19 lead to force a Bowling Green timeout.
- The teams continued going back-and-forth after the timeout up until back-to-back points gave Central Michigan the first set.
Set 2: Bowling Green 25, Central Michigan 18
- The teams traded points early in the set to a 5-5 tie, but two CMU points pushed them to a 7-5 lead.
- The Falcons battled back to tie it again, this time at 10-10, but the Chippewas reclaimed the lead at 13-11 to force a BGSU timeout.
- Bowling Green landed the next two points out of the timeout to knot it up at 13-13 before making it a 5-0 run for a 16-13 lead, resulting in a Central Michigan timeout.
- CMU added two points out of the timeout, but BGSU responded with a 3-0 run to rebuild the lead to 19-15.
- The Orange and Brown continued to build their lead, reaching a 23-18 advantage with Central Michigan taking their second timeout.
- The Falcons landed the next two points after the timeout to take the set and even the match.
Set 3: Central Michigan 25, Bowling Green 20
- Central Michigan started the set with a 4-0 run, forcing an early Bowling Green timeout in the set.
- The Falcons continued to chip away at the lead, but CMU pushed it back to 17-12 to bring the second Bowling Green timeout.
- A 6-1 stretch for the Falcons out of the timeout tied the set at 18-18 to force a timeout from Central Michigan.
- A 6-0 run for the Chippewas soon followed for a 24-19 lead before taking the set 25-20.
Set 4: Bowling Green 25, Central Michigan 15
- The Falcons tallied two quick 3-0 runs separated by one CMU point to gain a 6-1 advantage and force a Central Michigan timeout.
- Central Michigan trimmed the lead with a 3-0 run to 9-7, but the Falcons soon tallied a 4-0 run, including back-to-back Amanda Otten aces, to push the lead back to 14-9 to force a CMU timeout.
- BGSU and CMU traded points out of the timeout, but another 3-0 BGSU run made it a 8-1 stretch for the Falcons and an 18-10 lead.
- Central Michigan recorded a 3-0 run in response to trim the deficit to 18-13, but Bowling Green answered with a 4-0 run to push the lead to 22-13.
- The two teams went back-and-forth through the end of the set for a 25-15 score, sending the match to a fifth set.
Set 5: Central Michigan 15, Bowling Green 12
- The Falcons had an early 3-0 run to move in front 3-2 in the set, but the teams traded points from there up to the media timeout with Central Michigan leading 8-7 at the media break with the teams switching sides.
- The lead for Central Michigan stretched to 10-7 with a 3-0 run in total. The Falcons worked away at the lead, bringing it to 11-10 CMU with the Chippewas taking a timeout.
- The Falcons were able to tie it at 11-11, but back-to-back CMU points made it a 13-11 Central lead with a BGSU timeout.
- Bowling Green was able to log a point, but Central Michigan held on for the 15-12 set score.

- Lindsey LaPinta logged her fourth 20-dig match of the season and third consecutive, finishing with 21 in the match. The total also matches LaPinta's career-high, set earlier this season against Wright State on Sept. 8. LaPinta also matched her career-high for assists with five.
- Amanda Otten finished with a double-double, her second straight and third of the season. She concluded with a team-high 33 assists and added a career-high 14 digs, which were second on the team.
- Lauryn Hovey filled the stat sheet for the Falcons, logging a team-high 14 kills, nine digs, a team-high seven blocks and an assist. Hovey's six block assists and seven total blocks were both season highs. She maintained a .323 hitting percentage as well.
- Alexis Mettille registered a team-best .389 hitting percentage for the Falcons, landing eight kills on 18 attempts with one error. Mettille added a team-high four aces and two assists to her stat line, both season highs.
- Mia Tyler added 11 kills for the Falcons to go along with a career-high three assists and one dig to complete her stat line.

The Falcons will take to their road for their next two matches, playing a split road weekend. Bowling Green will first head to Buffalo on Oct. 17 to take on the Bulls before transitioning to Akron on Oct. 18 against the Zips. Both matches are set for 6 p.m. starts.

Both volleyball and hockey have had their start times adjusted for Oct. 26. Volleyball against Kent State will now be a 5 p.m. first serve at the Stroh Center while hockey against Ohio State is now set for a 7:37 p.m. puck drop at Slater Family Ice Arena. The Falcons held Buffalo to a .030 hitting percentage for the match and didn't allow them to reach 20 points in the set on their way to the sweep. Bowling Green is now 11-8 overall while being 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference.
