Falcons Begin Weekend Slate With 3-0 Sweep Over Kent State

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green State University volleyball team started off the weekend with a 3-0 win over Kent State Friday night (Oct. 25) at the Stroh Center. The Falcons and Golden Flashes played a tight match with a 25-23 first set score as well as a 26-24 final in the third set to conclude the match. Lauryn Hovey led the way for BGSU, landing 14 kills to go along with seven digs and two aces, including the match-clinching ace for the 26th point in the third set.

How It Happened
Set 1: Bowling Green 25, Kent State 23
- The two teams began back-and-forth with ties carrying deep into the set to 12-12. A 3-0 Kent State run pushed them in front, taking a 15-13 score into the media timeout.
- Out of the media break, BGSU tallied a 3-0 run to move out in front, 16-15, extending the lead to 19-17 to force a Kent State timeout.
- The lead for the Falcons reached 21-17 with a 4-0 run. Kent State responded with a 3-0 burst to draw within one at 21-20, trading points to a 24-23 score with a BGSU timeout.
- After the timeout, Lauryn Hovey landed a kill for the Falcons to take the set, 25-23 to move ahead 1-0 for the match.
Set 2: Bowling Green 25, Kent State 15
- The set began close before a 4-0 run for Kent State pushed the Golden Flashes to an 8-5 lead in the set.
- The Falcons answered with a 5-0 run to reclaim the lead with 10-8 score, forcing a Kent State timeout. Two more BGSU points out of the timeout made it a 7-0 run and 12-8 lead for the Falcons.
- Kent State registered a pair of points, but the Falcons added a 3-0 run to extend their lead to 15-10.
- The Golden Flashes logged another pair of points, but a 5-1 stretch pushed the BGSU advantage to 20-13, resulting in the second Kent State timeout of the set.
- BGSU and Kent State traded pairs of points through the end of the set for a BGSU 25-16 score.
Set 3: Bowling Green 26, Kent State 24
- The first run of the set came for the Falcons with a 3-0 stretch to take a 7-4 advantage followed by two traded points for an 8-5 score.
- Kent State responded with a 5-0 burst to take a 10-8 lead in the set, forcing a timeout from the Bowling Green bench.
- A 3-0 Falcon run out of the timeout put the Falcons back in front with an 11-10 lead before a tie at 11-11.
- The ties continued to 15-15 before a 3-0 run for the Golden Flashes gave them a 17-15 advantage with BGSU taking their second timeout of the set.
- The Falcons worked to chip away at the lead, drawing within one at 22-21 with Kent State calling timeout.
- BGSU continued to work at the lead, tying the set at 23-23 to bring about the second KSU timeout.
- Kent State registered the first point out of the timeout, but the Falcons knotted it up at 24-24, sending the set into extra points.
- BGSU tallied back-to-back points with a Jessica Andrews kill and a Hovey ace to claim the set and the match.

Falcon Stat Facts
- Jessica Andrews totaled four blocks in the match, bringing her career block total to 296. The mark for Andrews pushes her past Kaitlyn Skinner (2010-13) on the program's Rally Scoring Era list for seventh.
- Andrews added seven kills in the match, tying for second on the team. Andrews now has 121 kills this year, tying her single-season-high during her BGSU tenure, also landing 121 during her freshman campaign in 2022.
- Alexis Mettille registered two block assists for the Falcons, giving her 310 career total blocks in the Orange and Brown. Mettille is now tied with Alyssa Maloney (2013-16) for fifth during the program's Rally Scoring Era.
- Mettille added a team-high three aces in the match and now is one ace shy of entering the Top 10 during the program's Rally Scoring Era with 84 career aces.
- Lauryn Hovey led the Falcons in kills with 14 in three sets. Hovey added seven digs, coming close to a double-double while also being second on the team for aces with two.
- Mia Tyler filled the stat sheet for the Falcons, logging seven kills, four digs and four blocks. Tyler tied for the team lead in blocks for the match, including logging the lone BGSU solo block of the night.
- Amanda Otten set the BGSU attack with 31 assists and nearly had a double-double, finishing with eight digs, which were second on the team. Otten filled out her stat line with three kills, two blocks and an ace.
- Lindsey LaPinta led the Falcons in digs with nine and added two assists to the winning effort for BGSU.
- Sydnie Hernandez and Avery Anders produced similar stat lines for the Falcons, both logging five digs and three assists. The assist total for Anders was a new career-high.
- Bowling Green has now won nine straight over Kent State, including 17 of the last 18 meetings between the teams.
